ahhh, thats the new Romain Jerome made from actual moon dust. Instead of the CVSTOS i was seriously considering purchasing one of his pieces which use material straight from the titantic but their dealer network in UK is almost non-existant. Really love the whole RJ/Specialist material concept plus the watches look fantastic. A serious talking point and then some

As donkamio says....

It's a Romain Jerome Moon Rider.

Romain Jerome just finished a series of watches made from metal from the Titanic, and this is from the new range of space themed watches.

Dial has moon dust in it, case has fragments of Apollo XI, rider tabs have parts of a Soyuz rocket and the alligator strap that comes with it has fibres from a spacesuit used on the International Space Station. Bezel is carbon fibre.

Don't like it because of all the gimmicks, just think it's an amazingly different watch.

That's a beautiful watch Roffensian, pricey though :(

Funnily enough I was actually at my AD today looking at watches and he highlighted JLC as timepieces that are well regarded and hold their value. I haven't had a chance to browse through the catalogue as of yet but am impressed with those I have seen before.

What's the forum's consensus on JLC?

Jaeger make some fantastic watches, and have a very varied and diverse range, from the classical dressy pieces to huge in yoru face sport faces. The really great thing about them is how inventive and original they are, they have been a manufacture for over a 100 years so you do not over pay for R&D, there designs are completely original, and as confirmed by their CEO Jerome Lambert all their pieces are hand finished, and very well! Unlike say Patek who offer exccelent watches in terms of finish and movement at the top of their range and just really good watches at the lower end, Jaeger offer a more uniform standard and provide excellent value.

Personally I love the Reverso Grande GMT and Grande Date as well as most of the Master Compressor range.

From what I've now seen in the catalogue Altair I have to agree completely with what you've said earlier. The Master Compressor and Master Control ranges have some great pieces. Definitely interested in what I have seen and will enjoy doing some more research! Possibly in the future :D

I'd never heard of Romain Jerome until this thread! Every day's a school day!

I really like that Moon Rider piece actually Roff. I wonder how those "rusty bits of spaceship" are finished. Are they lacquered in some way or are they just left rusty? Eiether way, very different..... and I mean that in a good way. I like it.

The rusting is an artificial oxidation technique that is then stabilised. I don't understand the science behind it, but it's not natural rust. The metal for these (and for the earlier Titanic pieces) is smelted so that would remove the natural rust.

Incidentally, the Titanic pieces are amazing if you get a chance to see them. The metal was smelted in the same shipyard that built the Titanic and the carbon fibre used was produced using coke from the boiler stores of the Titanic. They also have some amazing designs.

As far as JLC goes, I still don't know which one I want. I don't like the Reversos, or the AMVOX, just not my style, but every day I change my mind on the others. I'll sit down with the catalogue when it arrives and see if anything sticks - it's really the only reason I haven't seriously pursued one yet.

Good question.

I have contacted them asking how I can go about acquiring one in Canada (they have no dealers here) and asking for more information.

These are limited production pieces and you pay for that - the tourbillons are well into six figures, but these 'normal' watches are more obtainable and relatively large production runs - the three steel variants of the non tourbillon are all a production run of 1,969 (the year of the first moon landing) and I am led to believe they are in the $15 - $20K range.

Hmmmm, $15 - $20k falls in to the "frustratingly" priced category for me. i.e. not impossible, but still one heck of a lot. (Oh and the "not impossible" quote is also somewhat reliant on a good exchange rate!)

I can relate to that. It will also depend on where I have to get one from - if I buy from one of the US ADs then the exchange is likely going to hurt, if on the other hand I can purchase directly from Switzerland then it won't be too bad.

It's only been a couple of days since I contacted them, so let's see what kind of response I get.

Had a quick look on their website today. Very interesting stuff, and I must say I LOVE the "Dark Side Of The Moon" model. It's just so different and yet massively understated in colour.

Not sure about the Titanic DNA pieces though. :? Considering the loss of life on that ship, it seems just a little bit macbre to me to have a piece of it on your wrist. Just seems wrong to be using salvaged metal from the wreck to make something purely for financial gain. Maybe it's just me.......

Dark Side of the Moon is nice, I just have too many dark faces. The others don't do it for me as they look too 'clean' with the gold or non oxidized steel

I understand the comments on the Titanic and that's one of the reasons why I didn't really do anything on those (cost of most models was also higher). It's a fantastic technical achievement, but it is also a little like graverobbing.

Wasn't it Romain Jerome who made the double tourbillon that didn't actually tell the time?

When I first saw one of those Titanic models I wondered if the rust would rub off on a shirt cuff...

It's not just you. If memory serves, there was a bitter debate about this on (I think) TZ. Some people got very worked up about it, threads were locked, etc etc.
