A bit OT, but I'd been considering starting a topic to ask if it was a bad idea to wear an automatic while shooting. I've never worn my watches at the range but didn't know if it was just unfounded paranoia; if golf's out, there's my answer on shooting. Thanks all for the information!

I wore my Rolex while shooting A-LOT!! Never had an effect on it.
When I say A-LOT... I mean A-Lot.

No one is saying it WILL hurt you watch, rather that it can. The better the golfer you are, the less risk.

I was told not to golf while wearing and automatic, because mostly of the automatic winding system...
Did you ever see how tiny is the screws holding the heavy big rotor in place?

I've seen the Rolex advertising behind the tees in major golf tournaments - I am assuming that the Pro's (sponsored by Rolex) wear their Rolex's while they are playing? Now, it wouldn't be good advertising for the watches if they fell apart or packed in during major tournaments (especially in front of TV cameras). Granted, we are talking about Pro's here (and not your average 'hacker' like me) but surely a lot of the shock is taken up by the ball, face of the club, shaft and the club grip itself. There's MHO

A clean ball strike isnt going to do anything likely. Bury the head of a 5 iron in the ground and it may be a different story. It is about gs - the change in velocity over the time the velocity changes. An average golf swing is 80mph, about 120 ft per second. But it occurs over a relatively long time and the end of the swing breaks down with various body movements. But bury an I80 mph swing in the ground and the change in velocity goes from 80 to zero really fast.

I really doubt if pro golfers or Rolex gives a rip whether a Datejust movement breaks. Who is going to knnow. We aren't talking about the bracelet breaking and a Rolex taking out a spectator (though that would be pretty funny). It's the movement that is at issue.

Granted sharkman, I have buried a 5 iron into the ground a few times  . There are an awful lot of things that absorb most of the energy in that 80 mph 'dink' into the ground before it gets to your forearm (where the watch is sitting). The flex in the club, the muscles and cartilages in the hand and wrist. The energy that still goes into the watch at this stage is surely no more than other 'shocks' dealt to it in daily wear? Now I have played golf on quite a number of occasions (or should I say 'hacked' :) ) and I have never heard of anyone breaking a watch whilst playing (apart from the guy with the TAG earlier in this thread).

I've never heardof anyone's sapphire crystal shattering on a wall strike except one guy on BS, but I don't plan on banging my watch on every wall I come across.

Bottom line -why risk it?

Still not sure why anyone would want to wear a big old Breitling on the golf course.

I golfed in my CE a while back and it lead to my watch running a minute slow a day... If you don't care how your watch keeps time, than golf in it.

Im still in shock at the thought of wearing a 48mm while golfing. Haha. I would reccomend the Tag golf watch. Has the crown on the opposite side so it doesnt dig into your hand, and its nice and slim with a rubber strap.

Hit em straight!!

Anyone remember Phil giving his Rolex to a spectator a couple years ago when his drive hit the dude on the wrist and broke his watch? I think it broke anyway.

Nor would I expect that you are planning on duffing your 5 iron into the ground every time you play it (at least I hope not sharkman) :D .
