I'm considering purchasing a Navatimer Montbrillant 1903, with white dail on calf leather for $2400. However the owner does not have the box or papers but is willing to meet at an AD.

It is in pretty good condition; 95-97%..... what is a fair price? and should I even consider it without box/papers?

Price is OK in that condition, nothing spectacular. This one's a dealer price so room to maneuvre - http://www.chrono24.com/en/search/index ... ntbrillant 1903&numresults=6

As long as the watch can be validated then the box and papers aren't really necessary and you can reassemble everything except the warranty if you wanted to protect future resale value.

If it's genuine and in good condition, then it's a very good price IMO..... but then I live in the UK so anything under list is good! If he's prepared to meet in an AD then you should be fine as the 1903 is not a well faked piece as far as I know so anything dodgy should be easy to spot. If you could post some pics up here we'll be able to tell you if it's pretty easily.

Roff, just out of interest how can you reassemble all the papers on a validated watch?

Breitling can arrange to reissue the COSC and can sell you box and instructions.

Can they do this for any age watch (within reason)? I guess the COSC will only be on post 2003 watches....

Some watches are COSC certified earlier than 2003 - Breitling committed to it in 1999. Not sure how far back they go but certainly for the last 10 years or so they should be able to help you out with manuals. In terms of the boxes, they are generally the current ones - I don't think that you can specifically request boxes from a certain year.

If the watch is legit then that sounds like a very good deal to me. It's a beautiful watch! I hope it works out for you. Would be great to see some pics if you have any.

I picked up a 1903 with bracelet in mint condition for a little over $3,000 a while back. And, it had been recently serviced by BUSA. Given the leather strap and absent box and papers, that's not a bad price. My only question would be when was it last serviced. Most of these left the shelf in the 2003 - 2004 time frame. If it has not been serviced since new, it is probably due. Dial in several hundred dollars for that.
