Hi folks, I have a breitling chronomat from the 1940s for sale. Watch is missing the bezel and chapter ring but otherwise appears to be all there. I can not remove the back to verify that the movement is intact. My father who was a watchmaker recently passed and this watch was in one of his watch cabinets. The dial is rough but there, hands are present and in good condition. The case is in pretty good shape and with a little polishing could be very nice. Buttons and crown are present and in good condition. The watch stem pulls out and allows you to set the hands so that much of the movement is intact. I would like to see this gem brought back to life or it's parts used to repair another. You will obviously need a bezel, slide rule chapter ring and crystal at a minimum to make this a complete watch. I know there is someone out there that would like to see this watch in their collection. Asking $600 for what would be a several thousand dollar watch restored.

Welcome to the site and sorry about your father.

The watch is a Breitling Chronomat 769 from 1946, and if you pop that into Google you can see what they look like. I think it’s unlikely someone will have all the parts to put this right, and it’s more likely that this could be a source of parts for someone else’s watch. Your missing parts are hard ones to find, and even getting a bezel to fit is tough as they vary in minute measurements that make some fit and not others, The case and pushers are useful, and of course the movement is useful. It look like the dial is pretty far gone and the hands look incorrect. There was a reason your dad didn’t fix it :-).

If you can’t get the back off (it would pop off if you can slip a knife into the seam between the caseback and the case and give it a little pry. Or take it to a jeweller), the movement is the most valuable part there, assuming it’s ok. If you don’t get any interest here, I’d suggest putting it on eBay with a very clear, good photo of the movement, and I think you’d get your $600 there.

Regards

Thank you very much for the info. I know this watch is pretty far gone but I have seen far worse selling online. I added some photos of the movement. Now that I knew it was a pop off not a screw off. I had naturally assumed it was a screw off. As for selling it I figured I would start here as I know watch collectors are my best bet, but if no one has any interest here I will post on ebay.

That was my opinion once I got it open, so I got out the tweezers and a magnifying loupe and noted most of that grubbiness is DNA or dirt. I cleaned most of the dirt off the case and pulled a bit out of the movement. In doing so I must have removed a blockage as the watch is now running and keeping good time for the last day.
