I actually prefer the steel!! The Defy TT is a monster!!!

As for the multicity:

Zenith el Primero Open 4037, beats at 36,600 vph, 43 Jewels, 351 components!!!! Not to mention those useful complications.

Update: felt well enough to go to the AD today and check out some Zeniths..Zenithes....Zens...Zenith watches and he did not have the Multicity, in fact it seemes like it is quite rare. I have to say I have fallen head over heels over that model and would have jumped on it if he had it in stock. As a conciliation prize however he did have the XXT, but only in white :? Very nice but not what I am looking for. Wish it had a date.

However, I saw this lovely thing (the one on the right)

http://www.zenith-watches.com/img/4_new ... g_32_7.jpg

OOOH baby, that's nice. I love big dates, the hand applied Romans and dial, the gorgeous display back with that silver and white contrasting dial. 45.5MM, El primero 410 with display back. This might be the Zenith for me. As an ever bigger incentive: imediate pick up AND a better price and discount I could have ever hoped for. That about 45% off US retail:shock:
About the same money a Chrono Evo on a bracelet would cost me.

I did not get it right then and there for one reason: I cant find any information on the movement, the AD did not know and I could not find anything in the catalogue. Now surfing the net I cant seem to find anything here as well. Is it a 36000 VPM movement? Jewels? Anyone know?

Thank you both, yes found that info. Very pleased with the result :D

Yes indeed try and get a better discount, the Grande Date is as popular as others due to it's cooperatively simple design, so a greater discount was possible.

That made no sense :?

Yes indeed try and get a better discount, the Grande Date is not as popular as others due to it's comparably simple design, so a greater discount was possible.

Well to those interested, I have made my decision. the Grande date it is. here are the points I have for this watch:

1- The open dial is tempting, but is not very dressy! On a sport watch like the Multicity or the Defy it would fit great, but on a dressier model I prefer the simple and elegant guiloshe dials.

2- The price of the XXT is higher than the Grande Date and lower than the Multicity, yet has the less features and least amount of function in a collection. Neither quite here or there.

3- The Grande Date has a, well, date  Something which I find quite important, the XXT doesn't. Enough said.

4- and most importantly: there is a reason the El Primero is so special: despite the fact that it was produced by Zenith alone against fierce competition by a consortium (Breitling/Hamilton-Buren/Heuer-Leonidas/Dubois-Depraz) to get the world's first automatic chronograph on the scene, it was also designed to have a date function. This might seem normal to us nowadays, but in 1969, it was anything but the rule. There were few chronographs of any kind with a date window before that (some examples by Landeron) - most had nothing and some Valjoux ones had a central pointer date, which interferes a little with the chronograph second hand legibility. So, not quite a first for the EP but it seems to have been a little bit of a trend-setter in that regard - after it came on the market, practically all chronograph movements were designed with it! To get this movement without the date would be pointless as it is great BECAUSE of the date. The Grande Date has the improved 3 wheel mechanism to boot.

5- The Hand applied and hand decorated dial on the Grande Date is similar to the Defy range in it's sheer beauty, truly the work of master watchmakers. The XXT is also excellent but it shows more class on the Grande Date.

6- Got too good a deal on the GD

Good for you Altair. Don't think I'll be making the same choice, but let's see what the AD says tomorrow. Either way it's going to be later in the year for me.

I understand your perspective on the date - same logic as having an automatic Navitimer without a date (though I guess it depends which side of the fence you come down on regarding 'world's first automatic chronograph'). I'm used to not having a date on all my watches so that's less of an issue for me, and with the incoming Legende the dressiness is less of an issue on a Zenith.

Either way, congrats and I get the feeling it may not be your last Zenith.........

ZenithSource anyone????

Thank you. For you're kind words and for spurring me along yet another purchase  No shortage of enablers here

Certainly not my last Zenith, I am also getting the Class Multicity, my AD says there is a waiting list on that one so might have to dig online again for this one too. A Defy is a possible eventuality, though nothing in the soon future that is for sure.

A second the Zenithsource.com notion :!: :!: :!: :!:

Oh yeah I also saw this one at the AD:

The Zenith Moonage

http://www.zenith-watches.com/scripts/g ... geid=3_2_8

But no discount on that one so it's out for now. For a dressy watch it's a bit too complicated and for a complicated watch the Multicity is more to my liking so was not as keen on it. Great piece however.

I didn't even realize the Open XXT doesn't have a date! This changes everything I went and looked at a Big Date but I find that the subdials don't site quite as nicely and the watch face isn't as balanced... *sigh*
