Work in finance as an internal wholesaler, looking to get into M&A or trading eventually. Also started and run my own automotive aftermarket part import/export company (www.rx7boutique.com).

I am an Operations/Logistics Liaison Officer working in Iraq as part of a DoD Team involved with the COIN (Counter Insurgency Initiative) on a strategic level and part of the nation rebuilding effort on the humanitarian front. We mentor, advise, and are consultants for an Iraqi owned trucking company that utilizes a consortium of Tribal Sheiks as sub contractors and they in turn provide jobs for their tribal members as Owner Operator Truck Drivers. This allows more US Soldiers to remain off the roads and exposing them to less IED threats. It also allows the Local Nationals an opportunity to earn an honest living by removing the temptation of working for the insurgents.

One more proof that the US is helping local population in Iraq and not invading.

May God keep you out of harm's way Montexn.

Thank you Tomcat, I can speak with some surety for our project that it has saved a lot of US Soldiers from the risk of being exposed to IED's and put some money in the pockets of the locals. Will this country ever come around? Do I think we were right in coming over here? Those are the usual questions that everyone asks me.

I think the people are capable of changing their country for the better, but they have to be willing to embrace change. Therein lies part of the problem, as a society they are very resistant to change and cling to doing business in an inefficient corrupt manner.

It is unfortunate that the world is a place full of despots such as Sadam, but history has proven that if the world turns a blind eye to the likes of these types of men, we all will pay for that complacency much more dearly down the road. The sad thing is that the USA and her allies are usually left with the task of taking the initiative in order to make the world a safer place for all, which puts our sons and daughters in harms way and in some cases the ultimate sacrifice is made. Lest anyone forget; freedom is, nor ever has been free, throughout the ages many good people have perished in order for others to live in freedom. Never take for granted the liberties you enjoy today without giving thanks to those that went before you and paid the ultimate sacrifice in order for you to enjoy those liberties.

Whew! Ok I'll step down off my :soapbox: now :)

I am a mining contractor specializing in underground operations. We recently commenced a 5-7 year contract where we retrieve copper ore from the old workings about 7kms inside (1000m vertical from surface) a mine. We fill the voids which were left when ore-bearing rock was taken out and then drill, blast and haul the ore form the 'pillars' which were left behind.

Before we can do this however, we have to support the 'roof' and sidewalls by drilling 6-10m holes in them and then insert cables with a sort of resin or grout to help stabilize the tunnels. FOG's (fall of ground) are a constant hazard!
Not a job everybody enjoys, but it gets under your skin and one can earn a little cash with it to support the Ling-addiction!

It's nice to see someone over here that isn't completely jaded about the situation. Unfortunately I'm one of those people, after a couple of years away from my family and not being able to find a decent job back home I've gotten sick of this damn place and really don't care about Iraq at all, not our soldiers over here mind you, just the country itself. That may make me a dick, but at this point I'm not too worried about it. Anyway, like I said, it's nice to hear from someone who feels passionately bout what they do.

That's fully understandable Justin, just hang in there and try to keep out of harm's way.

Life, apart being a bitch, it's a wheel, sooner or later it will turn.

Currently ''between contracts'', but normally underground mining, started in tin, in Cornwall, followed by gold mining in (under) the desert in the Red sea hills of Sudan, followed by a stint alongside Lake victoria, Kenya. Sorely miss it though.(waiting to be head hunted)?
