My wife acquired a pre-owned, minty Cartier Panthere Ruban watch in 18K yellow gold, with the diamond hour markers. It has the original box but no papers. I emailed Cartier Customer Service with the ref. # 2449, serial # and asked the year of manufacture. Their reply:

"........serial number details are guarded information pertinent to the original purchaser, thus we are unable to answer favorably to your request as we are bound by our Privacy Policy. {....yada, yada, yada.....}."

I replied reminding them that the request was for year of manufacture only, and not any other proprietary information. Their second reply was:

"......... We are sorry to inform you that we are unable to provide information based on creations that are no longer part of our Cartier Collections. {.....yada, yada, yada.....}."

Interesting........two different answers to the same simple manufacturing date request. Next was a call to Cartier Customer Service where the answer was vaguely similar to the second email reply. After a nice Q & A session, the call ended with no manufacturing date provided. The Cartier representative could not understand why I would expect them to keep and provide that information on discontinued collections, and I still don't understand why they would delete and/or not provide it. BTW, a local watchmaker has examined the watch....he declared it authentic, and infrequently used as there are no scratches, no signs of polishing, and almost no marks on the deployment style clasp pressure points.

Two queries about Cartier:

> Seriously? Am I expecting too much for a creation sold as part of a "Cartier Collection"? It's like collections become orphans when they are discontinued.
> Are there any public sources for Cartier production year information?

My wife doesn't really care about knowing the date manufacture - to her it's primarily a piece of jewelry.

Interesting responses and a sad reflection on PC. Privacy Policy is a perfect vehicle for doing nothing. I don't know what a year model has to do with protected information either.

Watchuseek and Timezone have boards dedicated to Cartier.
The members there may be more knowledgeable and helpful than Cartier ;-)
