I think most of us here have or have had a “collection” of watches. Some have two, some have twenty-two, but I think 3-6 are pretty common here. We each bought certain pieces to get here, some have bought and sold, some never sell. Some were bought recently, others long ago. Some were bought to fill a perceived “hole” in a collection, others are three variations on a preferred theme. Tastes also change over time, as do prices and new models.

So…if you were starting all over today, what would you buy? Would you get exactly the same watches you have now, would you go in a different direction, would you be torn between going in different directions? That’s the point of this little exercise. If there is interest, a lot of variations can be explored in terms of price, model restrictions, and the like. For example, my first thought in starting this was, “Start a collection, minimum 3 pieces, X dollars, one must be a new Breitling.” Thinking about it, though, for a first run, I want to be as inclusive as possible, especially since we have an ongoing debate about Breitling’s present product line. So, I’m trying this one out as inclusively as possible. New, used, vintage, Breitling, non-Breitling, it's up to you.

You have $21,000 and no watches. Minimum three watches, any maker you want. What do you buy today?

Some Rules:

1. Why $21,000? Because some of you will look at MSRP or what someone is selling on TimeZone and say, “I can get a discount” or “I can negotiate this price down.” Fine, then, your real dollars out are $20,000 and you slick negotiators are cutting a grand off of the asking prices, and I'm not considering sales tax or VAT for the same reason, plus its just too location-specific. The choice of dollar cap is totally arbitrary. I was at 16 and then chickened out at the last minute and raised it to 21. To me a classic cap for a lot of people is $10K, but with prices rising as they have in the last few years, inflation with replacing pieces you love and owned for a while, and particularly for those who only buy new I’m raising the ante. For the rest of us--its like free money, baby! If you like doing this, we can to a 10K, 15K, and so on. For those living in the land of the Pound or Euro, AUD, etc.-- I trust your conversion rate ability.

2. B.S. control-- This is an honor-with-verification setup, I don’t see any other way and I certainly don’t have the time to police it. I’m looking for MSRP on new or if you point out a listed price for grey market or the pre-owned watch on one of the net sites or many sales forums. Several forums exist which pull in ads from multiple sources, for example my present du jour is Watch Recon, but there are others out there. Chrono 24 is an option. Ebay----I guess so, why not. If some rarity exists which you have and love and would buy again now, I’m OK with using the dollars you paid in the last year. I may check some things for accuracy, but I do leave B.S. calling largely to the group. Please don’t abuse the privilege.

3. Pictures-- I hope you can provide these along with your choices. Another part of this is hopefully to broaden the interest in additional pieces, stir up a little thought about your present collection. I THINK, and somebody please correct me if they have looked into this, that a pic may be okay while identifying the source, be it manufacturer or a listing somebody has on WUS, for example, identifying the picture as theirs. I don’t want to encourage misappropriation, and also don’t want this to be a covert seller’s thread, either. Thoughts on this as we go forward may lead to tweaking the rules here.

Also, and this should go without saying, offer up different combinations if you want.

Any other questions, let me know. In the meantime, let’s try this. You have $21,000 and no watches. Minimum three watches, any maker you want. What do you buy today?

Yup.

SDC $10,400 - 15% = $8,840
DSOM $12,000 - 20% = $9,600
Total = $18,440

Leaving me with $2,560 for the colt which I can get for 30% off. Don't know MSRP on colt but I would bet $2,560 is right in the ball park.

Yeah, I know, he didn't read the rules, but was upfront with the calculations anyway. If you all want tweaks to them as we go, its up for discussion.

OK, let's stir things up a bit.

3 watches is tough for me, but as I mentioned a couple of weeks ago in another thread, my wife and I are thinking about retiring to the Caribbean in a few years and that will likely mean that I have no need for as many watches - time will be less relevant in my life. That may well mean that the only watch in my collection would be a G-Shock or similar because that is what I would need, but I approached this as 'if I had three watches for that lifestyle what would I choose'. So here are my (probably rather surprising) choices:

1) Casio Frogman GF1000NV-2 $650 - http://www.gshock.com/watches/Master_of_G/GF1000NV-2
Image

2) JLC Memovox Tribute to Deep Sea Auto $9,400 - http://www.ebay.ca/itm/Jaeger-LeCoultre ... 43c82c1eb2
Image

3) Gerald Genta Arena Bi Retro Sport $8,400 - http://www.ebay.ca/itm/Gerald-Genta-Are ... 5d4be60992
Image
Although in a perfect world I would choose a different dial colour which budget should allow if available

That should raise some eyebrows

I'm still thinking about this(!), but I just wanted to say I'm amused that I actually already own one of Roff's choices - the G-Shock Frogman - although mine is the black GFW-1000. (Incidentally, the GFW-1000 is the one to have as it has atomic timekeeping.)

OK, I'll take a shot at this, first one anyway.

1. I get my AP back! This time a 15400. $11485 5 days ago on Rolex Forums

Image

2. I'm re-buyng my bluesy. Waited too long for it. Paid $4700 for it last October.

Image

3. My one other cop-out piece. I love my Chrono-matic SE and bought it late last year. I think the listing from a member here was $2800.

Image

4. That leaves me $2015. I'd like a Speedy but the only ones around at this price point have more wear than I want. So, never had one, always wanted one, a Mille Miglia. One listed on TZ a few days ago for $1895.

Image

There. Honey, can I have 8 grand to change up my collection?
