Post subject:  Consolidating the lineup
Lately I have been considering dropping to a two or even one watch rotation instead of adding a fourth to the line-up. The wheels have been turning and I am torn between a one-two punch of a dressier work watch on leather and sporty weekender on bracelet or going all out and getting an all purpose stand alone show stopper.

Today I went to a local AD to check out the Rolex Explorer II as a potential sport option and it was a great looking piece, but I was drawn to the GMT-II in SS/YG. This is now on my mind as going all in with my current collection and sourcing one as my only wrist wear option.

What do you guys think? Can the GMT be an all in one (even if it is a bit flashy for casual weekend fun)?

Would you get bored with only one choice each morning?

Yes one would be boring! But here we are all in the same boat! I put a rule down for myself.... one high end, one medium end and one low end....but then you need a Breitling, first love and all thst! then you need a Rolex. , and what about the Seiko monster! Hey now I need a Chronograph! and the cycle begins! One... If Only!

Yeah, I'm going through the same thought process. I'm getting something else at the end of the year so I go back and forth on having 3 or 4 watches.

Well I'm possibly not the best person to comment on reducing the line up, but if you go with the GMT II TT as an everyday watch you can always have a true beater / knockabout watch for more casual weekend wear - anything from a G-Shock to a Seiko Monster would fit the bill and isn't really going to be so expensive as to count against the quota :lol:

I was thinking the same thing. A cheap field watch or diver would be needed for the few occasions when I go really casual. While I am not opposed to going with a bit of flash for casual days/nights around town a true beater would be needed for some cases.

Make sure you add one! if it were Swiss, it would be ten times the price!

For ten +years my GMT was my only watch.....Then I got a Movado as a dress watch from my workers....But my GMT was SS..
I've got a couple of beaters now...I usually go for my quartz Sector SK-8. Now I have a lot more trouble because I have a lot
more watches.....The simple days of just one :roll: I miss those days :(

For a two watch rotation I was thinking a Transocean (black dial/black croc) and Explorer II (white dial), which sure would be fun to switch back and forth from. This would require a bit more cash on my end depending on what I could liquidate my current line up for, but not a huge amount more than the TT GMT.

Having two stellar watches sure would be nice and simple, and there is a heck of a premium to add the YG to the GMT, so I am unsure if I am jut to anxious to get into some gold.

As you know I recently picked up the GMT in SS and I'll have to say it's probably the best purchase I've made...... so far... :lol: IMO it's probably the best modern Rolex money can buy in terms of value. That bezel is a work of art... it's crazy how you can see up close the way the numbers are cut out on the bezel.

and as much bling and flash those gold numbers on the TT have on the ceramic bezel, I think it can definitely be worn casually or formally...

no one even notices any of my watches... :lol:

I know what you mean...My GMT was to be the end ...Until I saw my Cockpit T/T.....I'll never get rid of those two.

I would definitely choose to have a 2 watch rotation over a single watch that was a little nicer. I also don't think I could have my only watch be a 2 tone.

With all that I have done in the past, I don't think I could (voluntarily) go back to one. I'll say this, though, the GMT is one of the better "only watch" candidates out there. Right now, I'd say that the best "only watch" out there within reason might be a Navi 01. For my use I still like my all-brushed Fighters, but with the 01 you have great size, black and white, a chrono, exhibition back, in-house manufacture, and strap options which can change it up. Tough to find now but maybe worth it.

I completely get the impulse to go to a true "big boy" leader watch. (although then the challenge is the level of the leader watch--working on that one myself) Two is probably the lowest I would advise to go, but it's all a matter of your likes. One good thing about Rolex is that because they hold value pretty well, a couple of years down the road you could flip it for a two-tone without too much pain. Personally, I like the Explorer/Transocean concept, but I'd also make sure you're ready to be without your Navitimer.

I agree that the GMT is a great value when I think of the way prices have been going up across the board. I could really see that TT on my wrist as a go to option. Such a great peice and I agree on being able to go casual/dressy as you mentioned earlier.

Last year didnt you have the Breguet taking up a big chunk of your holdings? I see you are now at 4 and diversified a bit now. Did you not enjoy the experiment?

I can easily get on board with a one two punch for some diversity and the Explorer II was quite impressive. If I end up going that route I would like to add the Explorer first and unload my CM24 and Aquatimer first and then sell the Navi and add funds for the Transocean. However now we are talking about 3K more I would need to add in by my estimates.

I did enjoy it. What happened to me was a very big and unexpected medical expense. I sold the Breguet, the Rolex and one of the Breitlings. I didn't really have to sell them but it just seemed the right thing to do. Another facet to it though was the realization that as much as I loved the Breguet, my leader watch had a brown dial. Just didn't work. My best advice would be that your leader is versatile enough to wear like it was your only watch. I think it's great to have a no-compromises watch you can be proud of everywhere, but choice is still probably the ultimate luxury.

I came back to having as many as I had, with the Yachtmaster as my leader, which has worked out better. Don't want to jinx it, but there's a reason I mentioned the level of your leader. I'm on the brink of a reduction to three, replacing the Sinn and the Yacht (hard to print that part of it) with a leader taking an even bigger chunk of the collection dollars. If I pull it off, you'll read it here first.
