A little bit of marketing spin, methinks!

To be fair there's a lot to like about Rolex - great cases, lovely movements, attention to detail, etc and these are all things that Rolex have worked long and hard to achieve. But they have also worked long and hard to achieve their current position in the market place, and that has been due to a number of additional factors outside of just having a quality product. A lot of it is down to perceived scarcity, and of course marketing. Can't fault them on that.

Blimey - is the reverse true also? I mean, I've never told anyone I'm a lady - so I must be one...don't tell my GF

Seriously tho...it's called 'marketing' and you'll see it everywhere - why are BMWs the 'Ultimate Driving Machine' ? Personally I think they're fine - for hairdressers - but I don't need their blurb to convince me one way or the other.

However, to make people look, to actually get people to put their hands in their pockets and pull out the cash, the marketing people go to huge lengths to create an image, true or slightly less true, of the product.

Heineken is supposed to be one of the greatest largers in the world, if you believe the marketing...

(Sorry to all BMW owners...one of my friends once described them as "well finished Cortinas"...kinda put it in perspectice for me - but that was in 1978...the marketing people maintain this has changed since... )

I get the marketing angle - and I have no problem with that - as a business owner I'm not going to tell people that my firm is 'no better than average' or whatever (we are of course the best in the business, but I digress).

My point is that a BMW (or whichever brand you prefer) doesn't stick its marketing in your face by putting "Ultimate Driving Machine" in 6" high letters down the side of the car, but every time I look at the face of the Rolex it's going to tell me it's superlative - almost like I need to be reminded why I bought it.

I'm not a Rolex fan, I won't ever buy one, but I certainly understand why people do, and there is a lot to like, I just find the superlative thing a bit unnecessary.

Maybe I'm just having another grumpy old man day :?

My point exactly - and not one of them has to tell you how superlative they are by plastering it on the dial
