I've been reading about the new Nomos Metro debuted at Basel, but I've also been reading about just as much hoopla over the "swing system" in the movement that will be added to other Nomos Movements. I don't understand what exactly this change is and why it's so special. Can someone explain it to me?

The Swing System is a new escapement - the thing that controls the rate of the watch. There isn't much technical information yet, but it's a huge deal because there are very few escapement suppliers and the largest, Swatch, is being allowed to cut supply to 3rd parties. In other words there will soon be a global shortage and no escapement, no watch. So by coming up with their own Nomos have eliminated that problem, at least as long as they can produce enough for their own needs. Other (major) watch companies have no capacity to produce escapements (in particular the hairspring) so for a small company to do it is a major achievement.

Thanks Roff, now I understand :D I just have two follow up questions:

Does that make the movements more in house? I've read that the movements are not in house because they are based on Peseux 7001 movements (but I believe they can be called manufacture movements because they are still constructed by Nomos)

Secondly, Does that mean that the models housed with the current movements are going to decrease in value?

Nomos claim to be a manufacture, there is some debate because they aren't that open about sources of things like mainplates. Most companies buy in escapements (as I said there aren't many companies producing them) so while it's certainly a marketing strategy to claim that you have your own it's not really seen as a differentiator. Breitling buy in escapements, even for their in house pieces.

As to value, well who knows. Nomos aren't revealing too many technical details yet so I'm guessing that it's not revolutionary, and prices apparently won't change so it likely shouldn't have too much impact, but the new escapement will be different from anything else available so that will likely help collectability even if there is no practical advantage.

That IS cool!!! I like it, but I like the highly complex looking pieces.
And if YOU need someone to buy it, I am going to need to dig my way into the Tower of London and heist the crown jewels!!! :P

You know that isn't half bad, well at least compared to some of the pieces you've liked :poke: The thing is while I genuinely like the look of it, and I'm sure it's a technical masterpiece as well, I couldn't imagine myself wearing it. Having said that, if I saw it on my wrist - who knows. That is easily my favorite Harry Winston to date though.

In some ways this is 'just' another DLC watch, but love the carbon bezel on this - http://blog.perpetuelle.com/watches/cle ... he-carbon/

I can't help thinking that Breitling would get a much more positive response to so many blacked out models if an Avenger style bezel was made from something like that!

Hell yeah, that carbon bezel Hydroscaphe looks badass! And here I was thinking you hated black watches! ;)

Couldn't agree more re the Avenger style bezel.

Are you a fan Roff? I actually quite like that. What's the price and size (I couldn't see them but I'm sure they're both out of my range).

I do like it. The Hydroscaph is 44mm, 50mm if you include the parts of the case that stick out around the mid-case, this is the same as the regular model except for the surface finish and bezel. Price is about CHF13,000, so likely $14 - $15k stateside. Clerc make some great pieces and are consistently one of the brands that I look at - may not be the highest in terms of pure watchmaking, but the overall package is frequently outstanding.
