Just wondering if any of you know what this part is used for in the Rolex 1601 model?

Those are to hold the movement tight inside the case. So they don't add anything to the function of the mechanical watch.
The little hole you see is where a screw goes in that screws into the watch movement itself, and the little hook, goes underneath a rim of the case.
Does that make sense?
