For an everyday beater, the Certina DS is nice. I like the Tag Heuer Link I have (pics in my gallery, follow the signature) and even if it's not discontinued it's quite tricky to find on the official website (but it's there). Of course, Tag is a bit more expensive (if you forget about the Aquaracer series) than Certina. In Sweden, my Tag was about 3 times a Certina, or 75% of a Breitling SuperOcean.

I'd say the Certina for a beater (or knockaround) watch. I've owned 2 Tags myself (an Aquagraph and an Aquaracer) and personally I just don't like the image they have. In this country at least they can be seen as a little bit "wide boy"! They can also be reasonably expensive for a true beater.

Mine is my quartz Omega Seamaster Pro that I picked up second-hand from the Bay. It's a very good watch but as I didn't pay the earth for it I'm happy to wear it in pretty much any situation. (Such as if I happen to get a bit :drunk: !)

I have a Tag Heuer Aquaracer for a beater myself. It's kind of a no frills, simple dive watch. Price wasn't staggering, but it also isn't a chronometer, only has a date function, and houses a modest unmodified ETA movement.

Tag tries to portray an image of luxury, but they lack the quality to back it up. Watchtime magazine had an article about the amount of money spent in marketing by each company. Rolex topped the list (surprise, surprise  ) but Tag was number 2, ahead of companies synonymous with quality and prestige. (Breitling and Omega.) It just goes to show that spending a ton of money on ambassadors (the likes of Tiger Woods, Uma Thurman, and Brad Pitt) and clever marketing (huge billboards, and a ton of magazine ads) can make your company a household name.

I would like Tag alot more if they invested less in Marketing and more in Research and Development. Although I must say their new Carrera model has peaked my interest slightly.

pre 70's certinas were very special indeed....lovely cases and movements and very elegent....not at all like a ling, much thinner/finer dress watches generally.

:yeahthat I agree completely. Tag's Calibre 36 is quite a piece of engineering, but they go and spoil it all by having a range that is 99% not chronometer rated and a probably around 60% quartz, all of which are unmodified ETA movements (as you rightly said).

I like a few Tag Heuer pieces. Especially the Carrera!
