My grandfather wore this watch in US Army missions around Europe, the US, and in Vietnam. It was recovered from his crash site where he was KIA in Vietnam and has only been used as a stopwatch by kids in the family when not resting in a drawer at my grandmother’s home. I’m so honored to have inherited this piece, and hope to wear it on a daily basis. Though, it seems like it will need quite a bit of investment to restore it to full functionality. I’m hoping to verify that it is a genuine piece and seek advice on how to best restore it.

I’ve combed through vintage 806 pictures to find a similar model to this one, but have yet to find an AOPA logo, with the cursive B, ‘Breitling,’ and ‘Geneve’ on the face with a non-silver arrow hand on the right sundial. Could someone please provide any useful information on this piece? I don’t have the watch in hand at the moment, but will soon be able to add more pictures.

Thanks much for the assistance!

Best,
Eric

the subdial hand isn’t original to the watch, logo is actually non-AOPA, but indicates a watch sold through the Breitling dealer network. looks like a late 1950s piece, the serial inside the caseback would tell precise date.

but most definitely genuine and worth restoring!

This watch is telling so many stories that is worth restoring and wearing. I would wear it proudly and smile every time I look at it and thinking of grandfather. Good luck and thank you for sharing.

If you have more details on your grandfather, feel free to share it with us.

Do a mechanical restoration only as you loose the patina and history (provenance) of the piece with a full restoration.
