I have just bough this anonymous dial watch that has the following marks on the back case 179 and a serial number 573453. Could this have been a ref 179 with a generic dial ?

yes, absolutely can. serial checks out as ref. 179 from March 1945 |

no, unbranded dials were the vast majority in the 1930s, still possible in the 40s |
