Looks almost too clean. Can't see any major issues, but I need experts here, not just me guessing at it.

Thanks!

I believe the dial and ring are correct , but Fred or someone else should confirm the hands

first reaction was slightly unbelieving, as it seems to good to be true, not sure whether there was some restauration done on the numerals, but if so it was done extremely well, a perfect find. Hands are wrong for the period, I think.

where did this one pop up ?

Probably salvage after the gold case was melted down. Correct hands for a 769 but a later model 769. Saw this one last night and probably not a bad price if you need one. Better have the case already though.

Agreed, all correct, but not all of the same period.

It is a repainted effort and not too bad. Off hand, the only thing I see missing are the three-minute tick marks on the minute register.

Morning gents. Thanks again for all the information!

This set was offered by the seller along with the movement, gold case, and stainless back. No outer crystal bezel was present. I was also concerned about the hands because I had never seen those hour/minute hands on the Chronomat. As a whole, it definitely seemed a franken, but if I could just get the dial and dial ring, I would be satisfied.

All in all, I'm afraid it's something of a scam. The seller agreed to a very reasonable price to seperate the lot, but then asked to be paid via bank transfer. Red Flag! We shall see if they end up accepting PayPal instead. So far it's just a cruel tease. }:-|

Crap! Cannot believe I missed those 3 minute ticks! Good eye, and why all eyes are needed.

Where these ever issued early on without them there? That hand in the minute register looks too long as well.

Early Chronomats would have been correct without the ticks, in fact the 1945 catalogue shows the watch without them (although I have seen 45s with the ticks). The ticks are for timing long distance phone calls which were charged in 3 minute intervals and I'm not sure if that model was in place when the Chronomat was first produced.

Not suggesting that Bill s wrong in this case, just that the absence of ticks wouldn't be an automatic red flag for me.

I actually think Bill is correct and its a repainted dial ?

look at the 2 red arrows , they seem kind of crudely painted ?

hands are right for the 769, but for the 1950s "Geneve" variation.
Have two 45s w/ ticks, a 42 without; still think the dial has been worked on, but exceedingly well.

Well, it seems that it really is the consensus that it's definitely franken if not totally redone. Should I take a pass on it? Hard telling when another will show, but I'm trying to change my ways and show a little patience and control. I already know I can get a redial made pretty cheap, but the finished product is yet to be seen.

Maybe if the price is right this would be the best solution for now? Then the question becomes what would be the price that's right for the dial and inner bezel in this situation. Not sure if you guys can help there, but if you can, I would appreciate it!

- btw - the seller did ok the use of PayPal, so I at least feel he actually has the items.

Ok - pointed out a few things to the seller and he now confirmed it has been refinished. That certainly lowers my excitement by quite a bit. Ugh.

looking at the asking price: pass
case/movement w/o bezel would go around 500 probably, so we are looking at much too high a price for a refinished dial with wrong hands.

I had him down to that range for just the dial and ring, but since they are refinished that changes everything. I'll pass unless he comes way down for just those two pieces. I may just see if he will sell me the inner bezel ring. Less likely to see those come available, refinished or not, I think.

Thanks for all the help everyone. Makes this rookie collector feel so much more at ease knowing there are guys like you willing to help.

Dave
