I think that the bridge engraving is clearly very recent and not very well done.

May be correct, it's consistent although the hands are obviously replacements designed for a much smaller watch. The case looks OK - big spacer on these for the movement as the case is relatively large (37mm).

that might not make it genuine

I can find several pieces on Ebay that look presactly the same , yet they're all fake

but I am not really qualified to comment here , I know very little about these

If the bridge were engraved (and we are in that period of maybe / maybe not), then this is the style of engraving that we would expect to see, but to me neither example looks refined enough to be real.

Do we have a really good close up from the engraving so we know what it should look like ?

A quick search here found this - viewtopic.php?f=11&t=24136. Not perfect photos, and I can't prove that it's correct, but the engraving looks 'sharper'.

I'm having a difficult time getting past the distinctive "7" on the dial. I just don't recognize that on a dial of the period.

I tend to forgive things like that because I have seen so many different font styles on these pieces. I'll agree that it's unusual, but there are a whole heap of unusual dial markings on pieces contemporary to this.

strange. would definitely not have expected a bridge engraving on a SS 40s 179.

posting some 40s engraved bridges in our "pre-50s bridge" thread to keep the info consolidated:
