I get it Kurt, but forums are here to discuss a learn, and “believe me” doesn’t further that aim. I find it hard to believe that someone would fake a caseback on what must be one of the most estoteric Breitlings that exists, where very very few people would even care about that particular execution, and then it finds it way on to to the market via an eBay seller that has no idea what they’re selling. Doesn’t make sense to me. I’d suspect the origins of variation are in the factory and not in the mischievous hands of a faker...

David, serial seems engraved, not stamped, fonts are close, but not identical.

there were no variations here - just ONE production run of these wide bezel cases.

maybe the caseback was lost and Breitling replaced it some decades ago and other service parts were mounted, maybe it was done by a third party, long ago or recently, to deceive.

we‘ll never know for sure how it happened - but we know the watch is incorrect in all parts.

as said, have only one bad pic on my phone - but own several of these and have handled several more.
happy to discuss anything, as you know, and we often do - but in this case I don’t know what else can be discussed?

I‘ll have to quote Kurt: trust us. ;)

Many of you have seen this watch on eBay

But please know that the dial is not correct for a Wide Bezel 62’, it’s from a 65’ AOPA Navitimer / Cosmonaute, minute and sweep hands are slightly too short, and the case back is fake.
The screw notches looks like a butcher molested them, and the “seventeen jewels” engraving in the movement is missing.

For my education: how do you know that the dial is not correct for a wide bezel 62? I just compared it to the one on your website and I cannot see a difference.
Also could it be that the counterweight on the seconds hand is too thick?

Oh right, didn´t notice that with the poor quality of the photos but now that you mention it, I can see it. Thanks for enlightening me and Happy New Year to you and everyone else!

So it went for 11k USD ... Bad news for someone!

The caseback is very dubious indeed. If it is completely fake then the engraving is exceptionally close and would have probably been less noticeable if the incorrect finishing didn’t already draw your eye.
The 64/65 dial though is the thing that kills this being passed off as a wide bezel 809, although as some comments here suggest, there are those not keen eyed enough to spot printed versus applied.

Even if the buyer has ignored the caseback and just taken it on the basis of the serial matching 1962 then they are still never finding the correct dial and hands. Which is not something that really feels right to be doing on a piece like this anyway, especially with that case back which will now be logged.

Someone has 11k of troublesome timepiece!

Curiously though, how can this be avoided?
I can't afford to pay such a sum only to realise it isn't really what it is.
