is it to minimize the wear and tear of constantly winding the watch, or is it more important to avoid letting the watches power reserve run out every week and stop running/

Just easier on the owners fingertips. 8)
I use an Orbita for my Rolex GMT because of the difficulty of resetting the two times.
It's just easier for me.
It does not harm the watch to wind down.
