The only "small" chrono besides Montbrillant is this... http://www.breitling.com/en/index.php#/ ... -galactic/

The closest options would be the SuperoceanChrono at 42mm or the Cockpit Chrono at 39mm. Then there are the Galactics, but the styling is even further away from the Skyland. The Superocean Chrono is by far the closest in styling. And the 3 and 1/2 mm size difference is pretty substantial. But 42mm would be too big for many women.

i think even 39mm might be a bit too big for her.. shes got skinny little wrists might look like a "hubcap on her wrist" as she says i'd have to get her to try one on first - so no surprise

There are smaller ones, but not chrono.

Does she usually wear big watches? 39mm is quite large for a lady but it really depends on personal style; I'm quite petite and am considering a few different 38mm+ models right now, but what's right for one person might not work for another.

Maybe she could try on a few for size and see what she was comfortable with, and then you could choose a surprise from the selection?

I love this size watch for a lady. I think that right now big watches and watch faces are in style much in the same way as menswear is coming back in style for ladies in the fashion world. I really love it and want it really bad!

Late to advise the OP, but just in case:

.My suggestion would be the Chrono Cockpit, which is something I'm considering myself at the minute. Here's a photo for reference:

I have 5.5" wrists, so maybe if you measure your wife's, it might act as a reasonable comparison? Hope that helps!

Late in the game too. The closest in style would be the Colt Oceane. It´s in the same model range with the AS, the Aeromarine. It´s a great size at 33,2mm. Same style bezel, case and bracelet. My wife loves that watch.

It´s a non Chrono and a quartz, but most ladies like it that way.

I bought my wife a Superocean II with yellow inner bezel, for christmas, she likes big sporty watches and the fact that its automatic. At only 42mm it's small for a ling but looks great on her wrist. I think this might be a good alternative.
