This is the photo that I love. The front-on publicity shots make the dial look flat-black, but this photo shows the lovely grainy texture and the concentric rings on the sub-dials.

because there is something like a "logical timeline" for the Co-Pilots, the "wider appeal" doesn't seem to be the issue, the watch is extremely well received ;)

yes, that Longines is one of the design copies of the Breitling, just like the Bregeuet TypeXX Aeronavale, that's why we B collector gave the First Execution AVI 765 the nickname Lucy; she's the groundbreaking design all others followed over the next decades.

and, surprisingly, even the forum feedback on h odinkee is overall positive (quite a sensation for that crowd of keyboard warriors there...)

(u need to remove the space after the h on the link if interested, our forum software still suppresses linking to that site.

as there is the typical "fauxtina" discussion on social media, here my info/response to that.
I understand people who generally frown at Re-Editions, think they hamper "creative innovation", can respect that, although I think a limited Re-Edition inspires & strengthens the "roots" in heritage any successful luxury brand needs.

and if you do a Re-Edition, it needs to be as perfect as technically possible., of course.

as I'm fighting w/ some "Fauxtina" warriors again, some background & info.

Lume on the Re-Edition is as close as technically possible in color and texture to what was used by Breitling during the 1950s & 1960s.

We went through all records to find the best color pictures/catalogs in the archives, spoke to watchmakers who had worked on these watches for decades, finally were lucky enough to find the former CEO of Breitling USA, who had joined the company in 1947 and led it from the mid-1950s to the “demise” in 1979 – all confirm we are as close as possible to the original as we could without a time warp; the lume is hand applied, just as it was in 1953.

I have really no idea where that “off white” or "white" lume myth originated; here’s a daylight shot of the Re-Edition w/ the oldest color pics we had, these are from the mid-1960s:

another feedback is: "why are you ripping off Breguet"?
expected that, the 765 AVI "inspired" many, but the Breguet TypeXX Aeronavle that resembles the Avi Mk1.2 was launched in 1958, half a decade after the Breitling ;)

I was glad to see the comments and how positive most were over on h o d I n k e e. I can understand some people questioning the fauxtina but I don’t get the complaints about water resistance. Personally I don’t care about the water resistance, but I don’t see what all the fuss is about if it’s just 30M.

I totally agree. The obsession with the apparent need for dive-watch-depth water resistance on every single watch drives me mad. The AVI is a pilot watch. If you're a pilot and you're wet, then you're in trouble. And if, as a pilot, you're anything more than bobbing around on the surface of a body of water, then you're in SERIOUS trouble!

30m is perfectly fine for the application which the watch was designed for. Screw-down pushers and everything else that goes with making a watch water resistant would completely ruin the look of many non-divers. It's like moaning that your Ferrari can't go off-road!

Unfortunately there are too many ill-informed, arm-chair experts (or rather keyboard warriors) that just like to pick holes in anything and everything.

Agreed. It’s like a new sport for those that don’t get away from their devices much.

First off -- kudos, Fred, on helping to birth yet another fantastic re-edition. Well done!

In the past, I have studied old color depictions of original models, and came to the conclusion that the color often attributed to "fauxtina" was, in fact, the actual original color of the lume (or, mighty close to it). Great to hear your analysis of this.

Lastly, I think that the recent plans to launch re-editions serves two important purposes. First, they are fantastic pieces in their own right, and offer the rare opportunity to own something that mirrors the original models. Perhaps even more important, though, these re-editions will help to re-set the general perception of the brand. I know that I am not alone in lamenting the deluge of uninformed opinions parroted by legions of watch forum lemmings who feel a need to slag all things Breitling (Whew! Glad to get that off my chest! :D) The re-editions provide a palpable reminder of the history of the brand, in a way that may well lead to folks perceiving the brand in a fundamentally different way -- particularly, as new models are also introduced that draw on Breitling's heritage for design inspiration.

Looking forward to the weeks ahead...

yes, that‘s what we are trying to do; revive what we consider the „essence“ of the brand.

let‘s see how you‘ll all like the next attempt (another 4 weeks to go).
