Breitling officially says, they could produce 50000 movements per Year, but they only produced 30000 movements in the last year. By authum they will finish a second production line, with additional production capacity for 50000 watches. So Breitling will be the third largest manufacturer of own movements behind ETA and Rolex!

alien, sorry but i doubt that Breitling will produce 50000 in house movements, it's impossible right now, this would means they will stop to use ETA movements... no?

d

50,000 movements in house, not 50,000 in house movements.

In other words they are producing ETA and Valjoux movements in house - they are far beyond copyright protection and it's a safeguard against Swatch Group's discontinuation of ebauches sales.

Roff, I've read somewhere that Breitling outsources even the production (some) of B01 parts, what is quite normal I think (quality control is way better if they have to send back some parts to a third party). But I can hardly imagine that they outsource in-house parts production while they are producing the 7750 in-house. I think that only a visit to the factory can blow off these clouds... I hope Breitling will not walk in the street TAG-Heuer did a few months ago.
BTW my 5th Breitling is on the way home to me :) and as soon as the Chronomat B01 will have a day-date version with a perpendicular date window (or Big Date) a B01 will come home with me some time... to tell the truth I could imagine further enhancement of the escapement: introducing balance bridge, direct fine-regulation on the balance, maybe Breguet hairspring. In this case the movement could be mentioned together with the highest ranking ones - almost there today. I'm missing primarily the weekday feature (see CSO...).

Best, Robert

I guarantee that Breitling outsource some B01 parts, but I don't see that from precluding them from producing 7750s and similar in house.

There are very, very few companies that produce everything in house because it doesn't make sense - why tool up to produce hairspings when you will end up spending a fortune on specialist equipment and staff and end up with something no better than you can buy from specialist suppliers? Why produce mainsprings when they aren't a differentiator of quality? Why produce movement screws? They're just screws, and as long as you buy from a supplier that properly blues their screws rather than chemically blueing them then the quality is fine.

On the other hand, if you are tooled to produce wheels and arbors then it's very little extra effort to produce them for different movements. If you've invested in CNC machines then why buy plates and bridges from suppliers?

No, the information I received by the the man from Breitling (whose name I forgot, and who is in charge of the B01 production) is, that the capacity for the production of B01 movements is 50.000 per year at the moment, and that the production capacity will be doubled by another line starting in september or october. Additionally they are producing Valjoux and ETA movements from outside parts. And of course some parts have to be bought from outside companies for every movement. No company produces 100% of their parts themselfs. Nearly everyone has to buy the hairsprings for example.

I thought there were a few companies out there that did make all of their own parts, even the springs?

Roger Dubuis makes everything in-house, hair-springs and all.

Seiko is another. Heck they even grow their own quartz crystals! The only thing they bring in is the raw corundum for their sapphire crystals which they then machine in house.

I think there are one or two other very high end Swiss makers who make everything themselves but I can't think of them off the top of my head.

Oh I totally agree - Dubuis make a tiny number compared to Breitling. I was just saying that they are an example of a company who do make everything themselves.

Hello,

I can confirm that, In AD stores in France the Emergency models are no longer available.
Here is a message seen on another forum, to confirm this rumor:
http://forums.watchuseek.com/f15/emergency-update-news-441197.html

Here is the answer from BUK:
"Thank you for taking the time to contact us regarding your Breitling Emergency. Please accept my apologies for the delay in my reply, I have been waiting for a response from Breitling Switzerland.

Breitling Switzerland have confirmed that the Emergency model will no longer be available with effect from 15th August 2010, unfortunately the production of the integrated circuits for the transmitters is no longer feasible with the technology conceived in 1995.

They have however confirmed that the after-sales service of this Emergency model will be maintained for many years as it is for all other discontinued models.

With regards to the future, a new product is now under development, but since very innovative technologies are required, no reliable schedule for the new launch is possible at the moment"

I hope that they will het from Dassault Systems enought spare parts, as you need to verify your Emergency transmitter every 2 years, I don't know how many owners around the world...
Perhaps we will have a change to change it with the new model, who knows?

Regards,

Challenger_fr
