Post subject: | 809 - 24 Hour Navitimer or Astro-Timer? |
Hi Everyone A little bit of side info I discovered whilst investigating the Transitional 1964 AVI covered here... viewtopic.php?f=11&t=65207 We all know a reference 809 is typically a COSMONAUTE But many of you will be aware of the 809s with NO-Cosmonaute text on the dial. Here are mine... Attachment: Astro1.jpg I tend to refer to them as 24 Hour Navitimers but should we be calling them ASTRO-TIMERS Here is a Wakmann Product Catalogue which features the rare 1963 Transitional 'Cosmonaute' (24 hour Navitimer) shown in my first picture above. Attachment: Wak2.jpg Where it is referred to as an ASTRO-TIMER Attachment: Wak4.jpg Just a thought but should/could we refer to these watches as an ASTRO-TIMER? I appreciate that when you go into the finer details of 806s and 809s there are several Mks and variations but maybe this helps to differentiate a model name within the 809 range that was produced across quite a few years. Look forward to hearing thoughts on this and if anyone has other examples of the term Astro-Timer being used... All the Best S |

ehm.... no. there's enough confusion w/ the ref. 809 naming, as "Cosmonaute" was considerred to "communist" in the US during the cold war years, afaik. no "Astro-Timer" was ever built? |

Yes, i appreciate the confusion and that no watch actually features the Astro-Timer wording, though it does seem that this word is being used in the advertising and catalogues. 1962 sees the original Cosmonaute and No-Cosmonaute Then only the No-Cosmonaute for 63/64 presumably around the time of the dislike for it’s closeness to the Russian word. Though by 1965 we see Cosmonaute re-introduced and then used ever since Whilst they still ran with the No-Cosmonaute into at least 67/68 and the new Twin Jet logo at the time. So you have large chunks of time where both are being produced so Astro-Timer helps to differentiate. Just a thought, though maybe more as a Nickname like with other pieces, saves saying ‘24 Hour Navitimer No-Cosmonaute’... |

1962 also had a cosmonaute without reference to navitimer (on the dial) |
