This was an interesting vintage SuperOcean chronograph that was recently sold at auction. While well worn and having some replacement parts, it looks to be pretty authentic, but is clearly missing a bezel insert or overlay. I have nothing to do with this watch, but it raised my curiosity as to how difficult it is to get parts for such rare watches. This one sold for £9,600, so I presume the buyer had a plan for it, but it would be a very expensive buy if there was no prospect of restoration.

You'd hope the buyer already had one and was using this as a donor for the dial. Otherwise they are probably buggered if they don't have parts in hand.

unless you have the parts needed you're in for the long (very long, like 10 years or more) haul to find authentic parts
on the other hand , parts or an incomplete watch, could be offered tomorrow , you never know

Interesting. So no secret stash of parts at Breitling or any chance that parts can be custom made using original techniques? I wonder why the high price then, as surely the number of people who could use it would be very small so the pool of bidders would be tiny. Then again, I guess that few would fight fiercely for the chance to use it as a donor.

because a complete and original watch will fetch 30-35 ? (at the moment, who knows what will happen in the next 2 - 3 years)

Wow, no wonder I'm not buying into vintage watches then. That's more than the price of a Patek 5712 on the used/grey market.

yes, but anyone can buy a Patek any day of the week , these watches are rare (like less than 8 or 10 seen over the last 10 years or so)

Absolutely true and it would be wonderful for a collector of vintage watches; however, I am not such a collector.
