My best guess is it's a WW2 bomb timer based upon the serial number being correct for that timeframe and the fact it has provisions for mounting on the wrist. You can see some examples here:

Rattrapante is simply a complication that allows for the timing of split times and I can see how that would be beneficial in military aviation use.
