I found a guy selling a somewhat vintage Chronospace without any papers or box for $1100. I was wondering what you guys thought of the deal.

it doesnt look like a real breitling strap now that i look at it. The guy said he would let me take it to La Swiss to verify its authenticity. It isnt a mechanical watch, which is what i really want, but its a nice ling none the less.

The watch looks real, the strap is not original. As far as I know, there are no fakes of Breitling watches with this movement (that work the same way with only one crown).
Only point is: I would never buy an old quartz watch, as You never know, how long it will work, and if You still can get the necessary parts. And this is one of the first versions of this watch.

Does anyone know the original price of this watch? Also what era is this watch from approximately? I'm trying to get an idea on what to offer him for it. Is it thermally compensated and COSC certified?

That watch is from before 1990, if I remember right, as it is the old version.
There is not the faintest smell of COSC or thermocompensation.

Pricing around that time was about 1200 to 1400 US$ at that time.

looks ok but for that cash, a nice used aerospace would be a better buy imho

but then again, neither are mechanical...if you want a mechanical digital, I'm about to sell my ventura sparc

One point that is also important:
The first versions of Aerospace and Chronospace had problems with water resistance due to a very thin caseback. That has been changed with the later models.

ya that was one thing i found interesting. The guy made it out like its so easy to pull the back off and it never came to mind how that might affect its water resistancy.

I've a collection of old catalogues which I've just dug out for you. Prices are for leather strap with steel buckle.
95/96 $1200
96/97 $1225
97/98 $1225

The Chronospace was superseded in 1998/99 by the wonderful B-1, one of which just happens to be sitting on my wrist as I type this :D .

As stated above, the Chronospace was discontinued in 1998 with the last examples being sold in 1999. There is a Chronospace on Ebay UK at the moment where the seller states the watch was made in 1990 but in his last unsuccessful auction, it was made in 1997! It's reasonable to say early - late 90's as the period of manufacture.

In "rip-off Britain", you'd pay around £600-£700 depending upon condition, box/papers etc. Whilst I really like the styling of the Chronospace, I would spend a bit more and go for a B-1. There are no problems with reliability and now that it is discontinued, it should hold its value on the second hand market so if you can find the money to buy one, it's a very cheap way to own a Breitling!

for anyone interested I didnt end up taking this. The bezel was really tight, no paperwork or box, watch was in ok running condition. The guy had no knowledge on the watch itself; he actually thought it had the ELT in it and according to him his uncle is one of the best watch makers in Canada.

I offered him a third of what he was asking and he denied it. If anyone is interested in it for a $1000 I could give you his info otherwise I doubt the guy is gonna sell it for that.
