..... To me, the fact still remains that if you're in a plane and it crashes (e.g. runs into a mountain), you'll have a 99.9% chance of perishing.

Hence the reason why I like to sit at the back of the plane.
Have you ever heard of a plane reversing into a mountain?

However, sadly that theory was of no use to the three passengers on Asiana Airlines Flight 214 :-(

I had a strong fear of flying, took flying lessons, figuring I'd stay with it until I got past the fear, and then I'd be able to tell if I liked it.

About 20 years and a bunch of ratings later, I teach it on wheels, skis, and floats.

So I've ended up flying twice since I originally posted. Here are my thoughts on overcoming this phobia.

Phobias are very strong and illogical, the only way I was able to get over it was with a lot of praying and the help of Good God. It worked and honestly I talked to psychologist who told me they couldn't cure flying traditionally because the symptoms from agoraphobia can be devastating and the desensitizing routine oft used in psychology is very difficult to achieve with plane trips since you would have to take so many over a long period of time.

I realized that fear built up these strong and illogical walls that, once they came down many aspects in my life improved where fear would dictate decision making in ways that detracted from my quality of life.

I also flew first class which helped. Its a less claustrophobic and takes some of the flying process out of flying, you can check in bags, you can change your flights, you get great service.

:wowzers

Is this a thread hijack, or is there a helpful recommendation in there somewhere?

Not a thread hijack, just goes to show anything can happen anytime

I'm 24 years old, have had 3 separate catastrophic engine failures while acting as pilot in command, and I've still never thought twice about getting in an airplane. Chalk it up to love or insanity.
