I have sussed out the other half would like a Nikon 1 (white) for xmas. I have no idea about cameras and there seems to be loads of different buying options on the net. Any suggestions? She's more of a point and shoot photographer but I think she would get into it and I think this could be a good start for her and it seems to be 'what she wants' so I better not veer of on another tangent. Just don't want to spend £600 if I could spend £400 max! Cheers Andrew |

My Brother in Law is a professional Photographer. He suggested to by beloved (his sis) that she should get a Nikon Coolpix for her next camera. She duly did, and its great. She is a point and shoot sort of person too, but as with all compact cameras there is a certain amount of autonomy and flexibility with these cameras. Reasonable prices and good quality, but I am not sure about white. If it helps, I have a Casio Exilim in silver, which for all intends and purposes is much the same sort of camera as the Coolpix. Its great and extremely reliable. Does that help? |

I would agree that the safest option would be to buy a point and shoot compact to start with but one with the facility for the user to control aperture and shutter speed settings. Go on the Amateur Photographer magazine website and check out their reviews. For no more than£200 you will get an excellent compact. You can't really go wrong with the offerings from any of the big brands. Personally I would favour Canon Sureshot and Nikon Coolpix models. Visit somewhere like PC world and try a few out for free. If she does really get into photography then a more advanced camera can be purchased but, like me, she can still use the compact as a carry everywhere camera so she never misses that photographic opportunity! |

I'd add the Panasonic Lumix TZ40 to the list. I have the older TZ10 and it's a brilliant camera. I've a Canon DSLR but rarely use it now. |

Well she's on her way already! Maybe have a look at a bridge camera, very like a DSLR but without interchangeable lens facility and usually with a good zoom. Have a look at the Olympus PEN series and the Panasonic G series cameras. These have the benefit of interchangeable lenses and won't break the bank. |

Sony NEX! Hands down! I have always been a creative person being that I know all the adobe programs etc... The NEX by sony gives you the quality of a professional camera on a smaller scale. It can also be used as a point and shoot, and comes with many features filters that are fun to play with! Get it! Ps. I own both this camera and a dslr, guess what? The dslr takes the back seat as I barely use it and regret buying it |
