By far my favourite distillery (because of their attitude and outrageous enthusiasm!) and my favourite peats whisky. The most heavily prayed in the world, and still last week at a whisky tasting night I ran it was the most popular with everyone. And these were NON whisky drinkers, a population who usually abhors peated whisky, that ended up loving it more than others like glenlivet 18yo. In the downside, it's expensive! But a great treat. |

Just made an order for some 'tasting' sets. Have the following coming to me this week. Laphroaig Triple Wood Oban 14 Year Old Balvenie DoubleWood 17 Year Old Nikka Taketsuru 21 Year Old Yamazaki 12 Year Old Miyagikyo 10 Year Old Yoichi 10 Year Old Hakushu 12 Year Old |

I haven't tried the Nikka 21yr old, but have tried the 'Nikka from the barrel' (which I bought because my wife liked the bottle shape lol) - it was an interesting flavour. Different from scotch whisky. Not stunning, but worth trying. It's only ~10-12yrold though, so I'm sure the 21yr old will be stunning. Haven't tried either of the Miyagikyo or Yoichi, but have tried the Hakashu which I prefered over the Yamazaki. Speaking of Yamazaki, thought you guys might appreciate a quick tour  The distillery is built on the side of a mountain in a smaller town, reached by the train from Osaka. The actual tour was a tad disappointing, mainly because it was done in a rather large group, and you had to stay behind the barriers at all times and couldnt walk up and touch things like we could in the Scottish distilleries. Thankfully they had a english audiotape with headphones available for us (although if you've seen a few distilleries you could just skip on the audio as it's the same as most Diageo tours). Danbo is a small figurine my wife and I take on holidays... we don't like trying to take photos of ourselves whilst overseas, and so use either him or watches as a photoprop to bring some life to otherwise dull photos. Unfortunately even Danbo was disappointed when we were ushered into the tasting room, eagerly to finally taste Yamazaki's wares... only to be served it in a large glass watered down with soda water! Attachment: small yamazaki tour 14.jpg In fact that was the only way in which they offered it, not even on the rocks or neat. I worked up enough nerve to say a nervous "sumimasen!" and to ask for a glass of the whisky neat (which my wife tells me in Japan is quite rude, as it implies the host didn't cater for you properly... but oh well, I was here to taste their whisky not their soda water!). The request for neat whisky was met with a bit of raised eyebrow by the staff, who then politely poured me a dram and went to add ice. When I explained politely that I didn't want ice this was met with even more surprise! "no ice?!?! ooooh!" The look they gave me was the same look you'd give someone who walks up to the hottest chili in a fair and asks to eat it straight. Thankfully they obliged and did pour me some neat. I like very peated and smokey single malts, so maybe the Triple Wood won't appeal to me either. I think a tasting bottle instead of a full bottle is the way to go in the first instance. |

Cannot wait to try these out over the next couple of weeks. It's a shame I don't have anyone local to me that would appreciate these as much as me. It'd be nice to have a whiskey partner.
