I've had half a dozen DSLR's, I like my Nikon more than I liked my Canon, but Sony also makes a very nice DSLR with a great 500mm zoom. These two were taken with a Sony DSLR; the second with a 500mm zoom.

Looking to pursue my first dslr... Looking at something rather entry level with room to grow, and thinking about either the T5i or D5200. Anyone have experience with either or both brands and can give me the pros and cons? Thanks! |

I don't have either one but you cannot go wrong with these cameras. It's what you are ready to spent on accessories, lenses, flash etc and what you need after. Both, Canon and Nikon, have pros and cons but to me, as an amateur, they both are good ones. I myself have Nikon D7000, good camera and all but, here's the BUT, usually it's too big camera to carry and it's not with me when I want it to be. It's not pocket size. So half year ago I downsized little bit and bought Sony RX100 and loving it. When I want to be "artistic" I still use D7000 but today usually my photos are snapshots using RX. So think before you buy, do you really need DSLR or can you do your photographing with pocket cameras, that's your dilemma. |

+1 on Sony. +1 on the weight of dslr! Unless you're an avid phtographer you'll find yourself leaving it at home more often than not. I also owned & love the Sony RX100. For longer reach, you might want to consider a 'bridge' dslr (non-interchangeable lens) that's small, light & plenty powerful (for my needs) like the Sony HX100 (or it's newr model equivalent). Price is low enough that I consider it 'diposable' technology, and thoroughly enjoy using it without a care in the world. You can read reviews at dpreview.com's sony talk forum. |

Sound advice so far, I too have the Nikon D7000 and would recommend a DSLR to anyone wishing to take their photography to a higher level. The D5200 is an excellent choice, not too big but obviously bigger than a bridge or a compact. A DSLR will allow you greater flexibility as your skills grow through the availability of various lenses to match your preferences (for eg long range telephotos for wildlife, wide angle for landscape or macro for close up work). If you want to shoot fast moving subjects like kids or sports then a DSLR will outperform most compacts and bridge cameras. All the major brands such as Canon, Sony, Nikon etc produce excellent entry level DSLRs. My advice would be to go to a reputable dealer and try out a few. Whilst a DSLR is quite a large camera to carry around it will give you excellent results and like me you can also have a compact when you don't want to be encumbered by anything bigger. |

What I did fail to mention is that I also own a NEX 5n... which is my go to camera when I leave the house/travel etc... I am looking to invest in a DSLR as I will be a father soon and I like taking portraits which the control of a DSLR and natural view finder. Also, being outside a lot, the DSLR will be much more user friendly versus my NEX due to the glare on the LCD screen, which is virtually useless outside. |

You can't go wrong with anything Nikon. Think about what you are going to be shooting with it and what tasks you need it to preform or you will out grow it fast. Make sure it is capable of the aperture you are looking for and that it can accommodate the lenses you want to use. |

Serge, is your Sony DSLR a Electronic View Finder though?.... if so I prefer the non-EVF. I'm only asking because I know that the have a lot of EVF's. |

I've had a DSLR too before, but as everyone stated, unless you're an avid photog, it does end up staying at home most of the time. That's why I sold it and picked up a Canon G12. Pretty much does everything a DSLR does, of course without the interchangeable lens. It's got a nice compact design, a superb LCD screen. The new upgraded ones like the G1x should produce 1080p video. Mine only does 720 but who cares... |

After more and more research and viewing nearly every YouTube clip on the web... I'm thinking about going with the D5200 by Nikon. The only thing that hurts is the non touch screen and the video stitching, but seems like the image quality will stand out. Thanks for the help y'all! |

Both are good at entry level. I don't think there's a whole lot between them these days. I went with Canon (currently on a 5D mk II) but would also have been happy with Nikon. The range and pricing of EF lenses swayed it for me in the end. I wanted the 100-400 L and the Nikon equivalent was noticeably more expensive. The more lenses one accumulates, the more disposable the camera body seems to be! |

Canon and Nikon DSLRs are pretty much of equally high quality. In the entry level models, you can't go wrong with either one. The differences get more obvious in the higher ranks where the two brands offer different solutions for different purposes. My need is best catered for by Canon, someone else's may be suited by Nikon. I'd just try them out in your place and go with what feels best for you. |
