The wife and I are leaving for Taiwan this weekend. I plan to sample some of the local and regional beers. I like smooth, golden lagers... my favorite beer is Dos Equis. I can tolerate domestic beers like Bud Lite, Coors Lite if my Dos Equis isn't available, and rather like the taste of MGD, though I've boycotted them for years for political reasons. I hate dark beers and ales.
Is anyone familiar enough with the regional and local beers to know what I should ask for in a smooth golden lager? I have drank Tsing Tao, a Chinese beer, and it's not bad. I like Sapporo, too, but that's a Japanese brew.
My wife speaks the language, but she isn't a drinker, so she has no idea what I"m after.

Taiwan Beer of course, about $1 a can
Stick to the "Gold Medal" one though. The one in the blue can might strip the lining of your stomach.

The beer, You are drinking is not even made out of malt and hops. Its a chemical brew based mainly on rice! How can You call that beer? Come to Germany, Austria, Czech Republic, Ireland, or the UK for some real beer!

If You cannot, try the canadian stuff. Molson, Labatts or Moosehead are quite acceptable.

At the risk of taking this way off topic, you can do a lot better than those in Canada, although agreed on the Moosehead.

Of course, TASTE is personal and subjective. Can't stomach the taste of labatts, but have been enjoying the Taiwan Beer for the last few days. Not the best, but not the worst, and plenty strong. My wife informed me today that the generic name is the result of the brewery formally being owned and operated by the government to offset monopoly by private company. Now also privately owned.
Personally, my favorite is Dos Equis Lager, but this will do away from home.

Drinking local beers is one of my favourite travel activities! Enjoy Taiwan, it's on the list for me.

Make sure you buy it in the large bottles much nicer than a can!

I've found the Taiwan Beer Gold Medal Lager in bottles Nd on tap to be the best, (Actually become a fan) followed by the same beer in cans. The Taiwan Beer in white cans w/ blue markings isn't as good, and has an after taste that reminds me of Fosters. The fruit, mango, pineapple and strawberry beers are tasty, but not really my cup of tea when I want a beer.
