Although you can certainly call me biased, the verdict is, almost, unanimous: the new BMW 3 series (F30) has been proclaimed the segment's leader. Here's an interesting quote from Car&Driver: “Will it (the new 3 series) end up bloodied and in the butcher’s case? Or is it still an SOB you don’t want to mess with..?” Read the answer and more here:http://www.bmwblog.com/2012/04/04/the-verdict-is-in/ |

I love that theyve made the back look more like the coupe and 5, but I really HATE the front lights with that little appendage sticking out. I think it looks horrible. |

I much prefer the new dashboard, I didn't care for the one in the old 3. The turbo 4 could be a benefit as the non-turbo 6 had some really dead spots in terms of torque. I know, sacrilege against the six, but that's how the automatic drove when I tried it, and I do too much bumper-to-bumper for a manual. The car would have lived its life in sport transmission mode. One big issue, however. That car would need new tires immediately--the braking distances with those low rolling-resistence tires in the C/D test are flat unacceptable. I got rid of an Acura after a year because of bad brakes, one of the most helpless feelings you can have driving. Inexcusable for a car with a Roundel on it. |

It's quite a gentle evolution of the current 3 IMO. Better all round no doubt, but still fairly gentle. But then after the Bangle era, that's no bad thing! Bring on the coupe I say! |

Depends on what you need, we had one in the family and if you don't mind it not being very civilized in terms of engine it is a very good car with very nice torque in the low revs. I do mind though, so I'm on the petrol side of things, even if that means less torque up till about 2500-3000 rpm. |

Yeah TBH I completely agree it depends on your wants and needs : I just really don't like my 320d, but then I've been spoilt by several seriously nice BMWs over the years - 740i M Sport, M3, 330Ci Convertible, 550i M-Sport. Even the 325i Coupe, 323i Coupe, 525i and 530's I've had were infinitely better cars IMO. Petrol (or big diesel at a push) is still the only way to go IMO, unless you really want to feel like you've given up on life! |

Well diesel is great because of the energy you gain from it... And that is fine in a heavy cow like a 4x4 or an xdrive, it vibrates, it's loud, you can't rev it, but it gets you going. However, in a rwd 3series, which for me is one of the most pleasant drives around in the present day auto market, I understand one would not necessarily want that. It's like a scalpel, a tool so nimble and precise, it'd have no use for a chainsaw's engine. To each task it's tool, to each car it's personality |
