How does one protect themselves from fraud via wire transfers?

i know you can research and ask for references and such from the seller, but, other than that, how do you guys protect yourself from fraud if you pay through wire transfers?

because of a poor expereince in the past with bank transfers, im very skeptical of using it as it offers no protection against fraud, where as paypal offers that protection.

so what are the options out there? is there any way to get your money back if the transcation goes through via bank transfer?
if so, what info do you guys usually request from the sellers?

As far as I am aware there is no protection using bank to bank payments

Paypal on its own offers some protection , using paypal in combination w/ your credit card offers most protection as you can do a 'charge back' through your CC company
