That JH16/3A combo looks killer. I've considered it, but I'm not sure I want to go that high end right now, since everything else in the chain is decidedly mid-fi. I was curious how a "lower end" custom like the JH5 would compare to the SE 535. Obviously being custom provides certain advantages, but based on the specs, I'm not sure.

As a general rule custom is better because of the seal - by creating as close to a perfect seal as possible you aren't losing as much sound - especially at the low end. I've not tried the JH5s, and obviously a demo set isn't a fair comparison anyway because it's not custom fit. to my mind, if you are going to commit to custom then get as good as you can - if the 16s are too much (and you can get them without the 3a) then look at the 13s which are effectively the same but without boosted bass - that may actually be a better choice depending on your style of listening. Remember that you are going to be paying about $150 or so for the moulds whether you use them for high end or low end IEMs.

I can tell that b&w p5 has more clean and naturell sound image then the Bose. And also has controltalk funktion for iphones. Better headphones for less money.

Not having heard the P5, I can't comment on this either way. That said, I think the QC15 sounds better than the QC3, and it costs the same as the P5. IMO, this would be the better comparison. The P5 gets pretty mixed reviews on Head-Fi, but then again, so does the QC15.

BTW, I'm guessing that headphones with "funktion" would sound great when listening to George Clinton.

I know this may be an anathema to some of the audiophiles on here but I use a set of £10 Koss Plugs with my in-ear (wireless) monitors for gigging and they work a treat!

Guess it's apples and oranges but it works for me!

I've not done as much stage work as you, and very little recent stuff, but I think that makes sense. I know someone who had to have his customs drilled because they were blocking the ambient noise and he was getting nothing from the audience. The engineers could give him his perfect balance of each instrument from the board but he described it as being too sterile - almost like the studio.

I bought a pair of Bose MIE2 for my ipod, works good. The only reason I bought it is the ones that came with the ipod fall out when I workout. No real difference in sound quality in my opinion.

A possible solution is to have a mic pointing at the audience and feed it just to the monitor mix, not the main.

That's a good idea, not sure if he has thought of that!

Sorry to poke fun, but this cracked me up.

Roff: "Hey man, what are you doing?"

Musician friend: "I'm drilling holes in my IEMs."

Roff: "You mean your thousand dollar customs?"

Musician friend: "Yeah."

Roff: "Why?"

Musician friend: "Cuz man...I can't hear the f-ing audience when I play. I need to feel the connection, man."

Roff: "Have you tried miking the audience and adding them into the mix on the soundboard?"

Musician friend: "Umm...."

To be fair......

Ambient vents are offered as options by most of the pro standard custom manufacturers for just this reason.

OK, that is fair. The mixing option is the first thing I thought of, though. I don't know that it ever would have occurred to me to drill holes. Then again, I'm not a musician.

On a related note, I thought blocking out outside noise was half the point of wearing IEMs during performance - not just to get more control over the sound mix, but also (especially) to protect hearing.
