Any other trail runners out there? At 7am tomorrow (about 16 hours away) I'm starting a 100km trail run. That's about 62 miles for the non-metric, and the course is TOUGH, very rocky and slippery with a lot of steep climbs. 18 hours is the target time. Frankly I'm a bit nervous at the moment, thinking about it has woken me up in the middle of the night for the last 2 nights in a row, so I thought I'd see whether it helped to write something about it. At least it's for charity, and it will be over soon! Anyone got any words of wisdom to help me sleep tonight? ![]() |

Yeah! Get the vaseline rubbed in or your meat and 2 veg may look like something out of a war film in a couple of days! ![]() Good luck with the run, I couldn't be arsed to do something that long even though I'm a regular at the gym! Cheers |

My only advice would be to forget about that, go to your AD and buy a new watch.....much more fun. 62miles??? I don't even like driving that far!! Good luck, hang in there, I'm sure you will feel a huge sense of accomplishment when you're finished. |

Holy smoke Otto! What's wrong with you man!?!? 62 miles over rough terrain? The only advice I can give is don't do it, put your feet up, have a beer and chill out! ![]() There seems to be a spate of people I know doing crazy distance things at the moment. One guy I know of is running 85 miles non-stop within the next few weeks. Admittedly his is on surfaced roads, so even though the distance is a bit more, I'm sure yours will be even tougher Otto. I also know a few guys who just finished a 350 mile cycle ride, including stopping off along the way to climb the 3 highest peaks in Wales. Madness! But in all seriousness, good luck with it Otto - hope it all goes OK. ![]() |

Thanks guys ![]() It seemed like a good idea when I agreed to it a year ago! Anyhow, the money's been raised and the gear has been packed. Off to try to get some sleep, I'll be back (in one or more pieces) in a couple of days and I'll let you know how it went. |

![]() Well good luck Otto, but I think I should be wishing you a speedy recovery from the mental illness that you must be suffering from to have agreed to this. Oh wait, you're a lawyer - mental illness required ![]() ![]() ![]() Hope it goes well and I admire you for doing something that would tire me out to watch. |

Good luck.... Hopefully you won't need it! That sounds really intense. Just keep your footing and get it over with as soon as possible! I have a friend who runs "ultra marathons". He told me about one in Death Valley: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Badwater_Ultramarathon You actually have to wear shoes 2 sizes to big because your feet swell so much during the run. The record holding runner averaged a mere 4 MPH pace... for 34 hours! Nuts! Be careful Otto, you might get addicted to this sort of thing. |

It's a little late for luck now Otto so I hope the race went well and you're still alive ![]() ![]() Seriously though congratulations for committing to such an awesome event. I'm sure you'll be glad you did it in the end (and you've recovered ![]() Iantheklutz wrote: Good luck.... Hopefully you won't need it! That sounds really intense. If anyone's interested I'd recommend reading 2 books written by Dean Carnazes, the ultramarathon man. That guy is a freak! It describes the Badwater marathon and other such events; nuts although definitely deserving of respect. As for me I'm good with 10km runs but for charity, maybe a half ![]() I'm interested to hear how it went Otto! |

Thanks all for the well wishes. ![]() Well I finished, in about 19 hours 50 minutes. 45th team across the line, out of about 500 - oh yeah, I should have mentioned it was a team event, but not a relay, all 4 team members had to run the whole way. One of our team had a knee injury and eventually had to pull out, which was a shame. Anyhow, I was very very happy just to finish. Events like that are for mountain goats, not lazy 97kg lawyers ![]() It was just before 3am when I finished, it's now 2pm and I finally feel up to eating and drinking something for the first time since the 80km mark of the race. Good signs! Anyhow, I have promised myself i will stick to shorter events from now on. |

For the record - my personal opinion is you are utterly insane. |
