One of the great things about sport is how a less gifted team can sometimes get up through sheer hard- nosed determination. There's not much doubt that this England team is more gifted than the Aussies (and the Australian team that lost in 2005 is one of the greatest cricket sides ever). But just occasionally a less gifted but much more determined team will win. I haven't seen an Australian team come so hard at an opponent since Alan Border went to England in 1989. I just hope they can keep it going... finish off this test and then on to Perth!

Cook gone after 7 balls. More brains in a pork pie as Boycott would say.

Another comprehensive defeat. Congrats again to Australia. This is getting painful.

Surprised Johnson didn't get a 10 wicket haul after his superb bowling in the 1st innings. Deserved it.

Yep, impressive victory, if rather predictable for a while. England are a mess right now but take nothing away from a great Australian performance.

I blame Botham - originally predicting a 5-0 series win.............. to England!

Another belting performance by the Australian team. Absolute and complete dominance, couple with absolute and complete capitulation from England. Not a very thrilling spectacle at the moment.

Oh well, there's always Perth....... with a nice bone-hard pitch, somewhat favouring Johnson's pace - I'm sure that will do wonders for Englands competitiveness!

I heard a radio interview with Michael Clarke this morning where he was asked if Australia would become over confident. His answer?

"Well, we've won two tests this calendar year. It's not hard to keep our feet on the ground."

I was a little afraid they'd lose some intensity in Perth. That eased my mind a little.

Yes, Shane Warne's column in the UK Daily Telegraph today makes that same point re that comment, re Clarke's impressive focus.

Ok. It's time to end the doom and gloom ! Finn and Bresnan in for the spinners and give the Aussies a bit of chin music !!!! Expect Johnson to chuck it all over the place as he has in the past. Sicknote Harris must be due for a lie down around now after playing two matches. Captain Cook to win the toss and bat ..........350-2 at close of play !!!!!! Off to bed now and see what the morning brings

And in the event... same old same old. Eng in a very good position with Aus 143-5, Haddin strolls in, Aus 264-5. He's been their nemesis. What would Cook give to win a ruddy toss.

Yeah I have to admit that the toss has been kind to Australia.

Haddin has indeed been the linchpin of this team. Another fantastic knock; glad the team kept him.

I haven't seen a ball but I assume that it was good bowling from England that provided them with the fantastic start? Smith and Haddin were obviously the difference; we have a match now, which is very exciting.

You reckon? Looks very much like business as usual to me at the mo  : Australia well and truly taking the spoils today. 326 for 6 being (apparently) the highest ever first day innings at the WACA in the Ashes. Great knock by Smith and Haddin.

So to summarise day one -

Australia -> :nutkick: <- England

Yeah I'd say at this point Australia are pretty well on top. Runs in the bank and all that. But you know the old adage: don't judge a pitch until both teams have batted on it.
