haven't seen much with time differences, but looks like a good day's play. Has to be some concern over England's attack - where would they be without Broad; and batting was hit and miss, but so far so good.

And quit whining about the weather Driver8, we've got snow on the ground already.

8/273. After 6/120 I'll take that. If we can push on to a little above 300 at least our bowlers will have a target to defend.

Couldn't agree more. Superb effort by Haddin and Johnson. Even if he struggles with the bowling lets keep him in the team as a batsman.

The match is nicely balanced indeed.

What a collapse by England. 7/89. Who would have thought

Mitchell Johnson! This is what we've been waiting all these years for. Unplayable. I haven't seen bowling with that kind of menace since Freddy Flintoff on 2005.

Wow. Mitch delivers on the hype. What a game-changer. I'm English but this is excellent for the series.

Great job by Johnson (and Harris), less than impressive batting by England and looks like Australia have now taken command with a lead well over 200. A draw would be a major victory for England at this point.

Wonder if the weather can save us like in '98?. How many more 1'st tests England can conspire to balls up ? Just off to watch the highlights and see if it was as bad as it sounded on the radio.

Hard to see England salvaging much here apart from pride. The question is how ruthless the Aussies can be. Need to take a leaf from the all black rugby team: when they have their foot on the throat they crush. Adelaide is usually a batsman's paradise but if Australia can crush England here they might take a psychological edge in.

 I don't think any pride salvaging is likely for our boys either!

England have been comprehensively out-bowled and out-batted by the Aussies in this Test - simple as that. All credit to the Australian side for coming back from the 3-0 defeat just 3 months ago. It'll be interesting to see how England react to this - pulling together and grinding out a decent result next time, or crumbling like a sandcastle as the tide comes in........

Hopefully they'll have the strength of character to bounce back as they do have a decent run of victories behind them recently, but I guess we'll find out.

But again, all credit to the Aussies for this one.

Don't write them off yet Driver8, they only need another 530 odd to win and they still have 2 days to do it

Congratulations to Australia for a decisive performance and good on England for being such good sports and paying back all of the gifts that they received from Australia in the summer series :!:

A decisive day indeed for the Aussies. Nice for the team to maintain (hopefully) its untarnished record at the gabba. This could be our first victory in 12 tests (or thereabouts) and obviously provide some much needed confidence and momentum in this ashes series. Will be interesting to see how England react. Was this just a blip or a sign of things to come?

In any case a fantastic start to the series. Here's hoping we get on with it and win the match.

I think England will come back and most likely Australia will fall away somewhat. There's a lot of class in that England side.
