I will give this a try. I really do like Talisker. I've recently just purchased their new 'storm'. It had a kick to it compared with the 10 year Talisker which has a smoother taste.

Interested to give this one a try though.

I am new to drinking single malts. I got "burned" a few years ago by someone offering up a dreadful version of something and I have been hesisitant to try it again. Then I bought a sample of Mac 18 and Glenlevit 18 and after drinking them found myself craving the smells and taste of scotch.

So a few reviews later I bought a bottle of Balvenie 12 Doublewood and have sapped 1/3 of the bottle. It has a nice flavor that mellows a good amount with a couple spoons of water. Then to splurge I bought the Balvenie 17 Doublewood to "see if there is a difference". There is. This 17 will take 1 spoon of water (or not) and is a lot smoother. OF course it damn well better be at $135 US!

I haven't built up the courage to try peated scotch yet, but will save this thread as a reminder.

Our longtime local spirits store is closing, likely the victim of Total Wine. I stopped by to see what was left (25% off, most taken) but they did have a bottle of the Distiller's edition of Talisker. Since I just finished off a bottle of 10, I picked one up. Probably try it this weekend, also picked up a bottle of Glengoyne, which is a bit milder for my wife. Nice "nightcap" drink for crazier days.

Hmmm. I'm tempted, but as a bottle of Lagavulin sat in my cupboard for many years as it was just too peaty, I'm worried this might do the same.

This has reminded me though of the road trip I did with my boy last year. Sunday - Gloucestershire to Fort William.

Before heading down to Aviemore.... Really scary incident on the way - touched the brakes on the car and the car veered violently left into the just-noticed Glenmorangie distillery shop carpark.

So shocked that I needed a drink.

Having recovered we completed our journey and cooked steak with a cream sauce and fresh vegetables to accompany a wee dram.

I've not found Benromach Peat Smoke in a shop yet, only the odd pub.......... but then getting hold of a bottle of Laga in a shop around here is impossible too. Best bet will be on-line I'd have thought. To be honest though, even though the Benromach Peat Smoke isn't up there with Laga, you may still find it a little too smokey.

Made by Bruichladdich, peatiest whisky ever made at 167ppm on the 5yr old, and the 10yr old is ~87ppm (about double Laphroaig).
Surprisingly smooth and sweet for something so peaty.

You can buy it online from Dan Murphy's, but it's definitely a treat for special occasions ;-)

A wise man once said to me that whilst most of the advice given to parents is worth listening to, the most important thing as a parentis to make memories.

Which is why we did this trip. And why the year before we loaded up the motorbike and rode down to Amalfi.

Crossing the Alps, visiting Pisa, riding all day in 42 degree heat, getting escorted out of Paris by the police... all great memories

Do any of the UK members here have a reputable online store they've bought from? Typically I'd use a shop here in Brighton but they don't stock it.

With a dash of water (which it can take as it's bottled at 46%) it's got a huge but also mellow smoky nose to it (as you would expect), but the taste and finish is somehow much "softer" than a Laphroaig. I'm not one for flowery descriptions when whisky (or wine or beer) tasting, but what I can say is that it's distinctly different from the peated single malts from the islands. Not better, not worse, just different - but in a very nice and enjoyable way. It's apparently only 7 years old, but IMO you wouldn't know it, so it shows that age isn't everything.

Basically, if you like smoky single malts, give this one a try. :thumbsup:


Living in the right part of the world :lol: I bumped into a chap a few weeks ago who works there.
He said the :lol: peat whisky was made for just 2 weeks of the year.
We had got onto the subject of whisky as we both waited for a Chinese take out in Grantown-On-Spey.
I had mentioned that I wasn't a great fan of Speyside whisky as I preferred a peaty dram myself.
This was how I found out about the peat whisky!

Claim to fame: When we lived in Cawdor, the burn that Royal Brackla use to make their whisky ran through our back garden!

I picked up a couple of new bottles this weekend. A 12 y/o Caol Ila and a 16 y/o Lagavulin. Both very tasty.
