Yes, a very good first day for the home side.

Having said that...

1. I don't think the Gabba pitch has as many runs in it this year as it usually does.
2. I was not encouraged by what I saw of Johnson yesterday. He needs to find some control, quickly.

Solid start by Australia this morning so far.

By the way, D8, I liked the Glenn McGrath-style prediction of 5-0. :D

Although I missed the first day I think it could be summed up in 2 words...Peter Siddle!!! Outstanding effort that!

Made it home and have been in front of the television ever since. Day 2 third session all England, Ponting out from a rubbish ball; Katich ordinary dismissal; Clark should have been out. Fairly balanced at the moment and well done to England. From 0/78 to 3/100, pretty good stuff!

Day 3 requires four words and several exclamation marks...

Mike Hussey/ Brad Haddin!!!!!

(Altho in fairness i have to admit that Huss was plum early in the day and James Anderson was truly superb with no luck at all)

Agree on all counts. England will surely regret the way they used their challenges today.

Australia in control, but England aren't quite out of it yet, if they can keep their heads up and make 350-400 it will make for a tricky chase on the last day.

PS Hussey and Haddin made me eat my words today. There are runs in this pitch after all

Looking good for an exciting finish if England can bat for around another 3 hours and let the Aussies chase around 250-275 with about three hours to get them.

Stand back and light the blue touch paper !!!!!!

Should be an interesting day, but I think we're headed for a draw. Still, stranger things have happened!

So it ends honours even in the first test but I think England will come away from Brisbane far happier after staring down a barrel at the end of day 3.

Not the most exciting of matches but the number of records tumbling should see it remembered in the record books for a long time.

Hopefully, we'll see a pitch that offers the bowlers a bit more in Adelaide and have a more even contest between bat and ball.

Agreed on all counts, Sharkie. England made no real effort to force a result, they were justifiably content with a draw.

The press here have already decided that Australia are gone. It certainly was an abysmal bowling and fielding display for the last two days, but worth noting that it was about as dead a Test pitch as I've seen outside the subcontinent (my prediction about the pitch not having runs in it couldn't have been more wrong  ).

Onwards to Adelaide... The Australian bowlers will be wishing there was a longer break.

The problem is that Adelaide is known as a batsman's paradise. Unless the curator does something dramatic or one team chokes (a la 2006) we could be heading for another draw.

Congratulations Sharky. Great effort by England, particularly Strauss, Cook and Trott. Ordinary bowling and catching from Australia as Otto said but a fair result really I think. The advantage going into the 2nd test is definitely with England. The Australian bowlers and middle order are in trouble I think unless something happens over the next few days to reverse current form. It will be an interesting test in Adelaide. Look for a draw unless one team implodes.

If England don't go on to win from this position, they might as well give up and play tiddlywinks instead. Cook really has come into form at the right time with 17 hours at the crease without dissmisal. If England can add around 250-300 more runs, with 2 day to get 10 wickets, the Aussies must go 0-1 down.

:cheer: :cheer: :cheer: :cheer: :cheer: Throw another Aussie bowler on the barbie, the Barmy Army are in party mood again :!: :!: :!: :!: :cheer: :cheer: :cheer: :cheer:

Yeah, this is looking good - a 75 run lead at the end of the 1st innings would have been nice - to be there after 2 days with 8 wickets left is an amazingly stong position. Going to be an uphill battle for the Aussies now to avoid defeat.
