This may well have been asked before so apologies in advance if it has. How do many members on this forum take such excellent quality pictures of their watches? When I recently sold a watch all of the pics I took were not very good - is it:

1 - down to quality of camera - megapixels, lense etc.?
2 - positioning of subject - ie watch in specific surface in particluar light setting?
3 - technique?
4 - a combination of the above?

I am eagerly saving for my 1st Breitling and am keen to take some pics & get them on here as soon as I do so any advice much appreciated.

This topic came up just the other day. There were some really good responses to a similar question. I have posted the link here. Good luck with your pics.

A camera can only take as good of pics as the user is capable. Some people go out and spend a grand on a DSLR and wonder why their photos still suck. A decent point and click ($300?) camera can take great pics if you know what your doing.

Lighting is extremely important. Natural light reigns supreme. If you dont have a light box, natural is the way to go. If your camera doesnt have an optical image stabilization, youll need a tripod to keep the camera steady for those close-ups or long shutter shots. A macro setting is necessary for the extreme close ups.

To re-emphasize: lighting is half the battle.

A lightbox is pretty much all you need. Even most point and shoot's have a macro mode (usually a flower icon). Put it on macro and turn the flash off ;)
