| Post subject: | Reasons for a watch to go on sale? |
I was browsing my AD today looking for my SuperOcean Heritage. The dealer had 3 in store, the black/black, Black/silver and blue/blue. The black/silver was on a rubber strap and the dealer said it normally retails for £2930 but this one was reduced and for sale at £2350. The reason he gave to me was they were doing a special offer. I thought this was quite strange because the other 2 SOH were still at RRP. Indeed, I could see no other Breitling watches on sale for matter. It made me wonder whether the watch had been sat in the window since 2011 or something like that, or whether it was an unwanted return. Are individual price reductions like these normal? On a sidenote, how would I know whether or not the watch I'm buying is actually brand new and not in fact an unwanted return? (sorry if these questions seem silly, but this is my first major watch purchase so just trying to get as much info as I can before I pull the trigger.) |

If they're an actual AD they can't just take watches that have been worn and throw em up for sale again. I'm not saying some haven't done it. when an AD sells a Breitling they will date the warranty card for that watch. What's most important is that the watch is flawless. As for the sale, most ADs have to pay for their watches up front...at least from my experience...so if they put in a big order like after Basel for example they may need to move some pieces quickly to free up cash. They are supposed to date the warranty card, but most do not. An AD I no longer frequent had a one week return and 30 exchange for full price policy. Twice I brought watches back and both were in the display as new each time I later visited. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

Well, I say "unfortunately" ; it's very fortunate for the buyer with a cast iron get out clause if "buyer's remorse" takes over, but less fortunate for any future buyers of a watch that may potentially have been worn for the equivalent of a few months if it had been bought more than once and then returned. I remember when I bought an M1 and owned it for less than 24 hours before realising that ti and expensive quartz really weren't for me, and I had to to fight tooth and nail with my then AD for a refund. Eventually they agreed to a full refund, but only in trade against something else (my first Navi World), and this was an AD I had a personal and long standing relationship with. While I was little annoyed about their inflexibility, I can fully appreciate their integrity for not wanting to sell a previously sold watch as brand new. As it was, the M1 was totally mint and less than 24 hours out of the shop, so they relented. |

Yeah I would be suspicious of GBP600 off a single piece, and as others have said if the warranty is left undated then there is absolutely no way of knowing if the piece is truly new. I would definitely be going over it with a magnifying glass for any indication of hairline scratches to see whether it had been out in the world. |
