I've had this happened a couple of times when purchasing a preloved timepiece. Happened first when I purchased my first Omega Pro Ti series. Although the watch has been serviced a few months prior to my purchase, the watch for some unknown reason tried to adjust on me as its new owner. It took a couple of days before the functionality is at its best again. For instance, my SuperOcean upon purchasing didn't reach its power reserve and stopped after only 17 hours even fully wound while left in the box. It even stopped once while on my wrist. Somehow, I feel that it's just trying to adjust to its new owner . The previous owner mentioned that it never happened to him and the watch don't even get winded since he always wears it. Btw, a full service was done in 2012. So finally it happened and the watch is back to its full COSC specs again. Full power reserve and keeping perfect time after a couple of days of ownership. Now it's been over a couple of weeks and I couldn't be happier with my first Breitling!

No that observation has never happened to me. One or two watches purchased years ago refused to work at all when I got them. Never mind, that's all part of a watch obsessed life I guess.

Perhaps you are right in believing the watch might take some time to get used to you. It could be that you don't do as much arm waiving as some, and perhaps the power reserve takes a bit of time to get up to its high point (only joking).

My beloved used to believe that the electrical energy in her body was responsible for slowing her Omega Deville quartz, to the point that she had it duct taped up so it kept time. All good though, as when it finally went to the great watch cemetery in the sky I bought her the mechanical version straight away. Fortunately, it has never let her down, run slow or stopped for no particular reason at all.

there are some situations, where a watch is used to a certain position, and suddenly it changes and the watch does not get that anymore. Now the characteristics of the watch can change noticeably.
A good example are regular public transport users, who allways stand in a crowded bus, holding on rail above. That brings the watch in the "crown on top" position, which is quite unusual. Now if the watch is exposed two hours a day in that position for a couple of years, the balancewheel and pin can have a different wear, and sunndenly it does not get it anymore, it might have to adjust.
