Post subject:  Can Someone Tell If I Am Getting A Good Deal?! Chronomat Evo

Hi Guys,
I am new to this forum and have a pending purchase on a pre-owned Breitling Chronomat Evolution with MOP Dial and Factory diamond dial and bezel. Comes from a trusted friend but does not have original paperwork like the diamond certificate... However, I can take to an AD to have the bezel "authenticated" and if it turns out to be an aftermarket bezel, then my money will be refunded. I am paying $6000 cash. Seems like a good deal as the watch is immaculate and retails for around $14,000. Am I getting a good deal worth buying? Note that this is my first Breitling as well.
Thank You

Oh, and also forgot to add that I saw the same exact watch at Tourneau preowned for $9450

I think the experts (I'm not one) and everyone else would love to see pictures?

No pictures at the moment... I will however be posting pictures when I pick up the watch on Thursday. I just need to make sure I am getting a good deal before I go through with spending all my money. After all I am only 20...
Thank You

I am really looking for everyone's opinion here. I am BRAND NEW to the watch world and its hard to find a price on these as they don't seem to come up that often. Hopefully I can get a lot of feedback.
Thanks in advance everyone

Hi , there are a number of factors that would determine the value like does it come with all the paperwork?
You mentioned no diamond certificate but what about the manual, warranty, COSC certificate all matching the serial number? What about the original box? How old is it? When was the last service and if so was it serviced at an authorized service centre?
Finally, is it real, does your friend have the details of the watch's complete history or maybe it "fell off the back of a truck" , stolen and resold, etc.......
All of this determines the resale value to me.

Cheers,

Wessa.

Diamond Breitlings lose value quicker than gold Breitlings, and while list price may be around $14k, that's sure as heck not what they sell for. Advice in the FAQs is to check completed eBay listings and places like Chrono24. A search of Chrono24 shows a bunch of new ones on pilot bracelet for under $7,500 - and those are dealer asking prices.

You don't say which strap / bracelet yours is on which also affects the price. I don't do pricing advice on modern pieces, but a little bit of research will show you that it's not necessarily the deal that you think it is.

You don't want a diamond bezel, do you ?

A second hand Evo on the pilot bracelet.... with a factory diamond bezel, is NOT worth $6000. IMO.

This deal is problematic at best. Here's how I see it. IF your friend bought it at an AD, where's the paperwork? IF your friend bought it second hand, where's the paperwork? Is the serial number still intact?

No serial = worthless watch (when it come time for a full service)

No paperwork = out of warranty, no authentication of the watch and diamond bezel.

No factory diamond bezel = $1000 less minimum

I am not saying your friend is trying to pull one over on you, but maybe whoever sold it to him DID.

Proceed with extreme caution. I wouldn't even consider it without meeting at an AD and having them 1) authenticate the watch and 2) authenticate the diamond bezel. Use the resources here and at a dealer and don't throw your money away on a bad deal. Post, up close pictures here..... BEFORE YOU LAY OUT THE CASH.

Now if it's real, on a bracelet and on a factory diamond bezel, I would price it around $5000ish. Remember it's probably over due for a full service ($500-$750)

If it's real, on a bracelet and an aftermarket diamond bezel.... around $3500

:yeahthat You can't get better advice than that. Frankly, I wouldn't even think about a Breitling with an aftermarket diamond bezel. I haven't seen one yet that didn't look trashy, especially when compared to Breitling's own. But that's just me. At any rate, I agree with BroncoSport - proceed with caution, and when in doubt, don't do it.

Ok, I will say it - 6k is too much for a used iced Evo. As Roff said, 7-7.5 is what gray market dealers are offering brand spanking new ones for. If you love it and can afford it, just get it.

New, gold watches get bigger discounts than SS. Diamond watches get bigger discounts than gold. Why? The full retail is inflated far beyond the cost of a precious metal or the gem stones. So a decent discount of 25% on a regular SS Breitling is too low on a gold Breitling and even lower on an iced Breitling. Also the more expensive the watch the more % discount the AD can give because the net profit Is still there.

So a diamond watch that retails at 11k can be had at 7.5 NEW because dealer cost is less than 60%. And. The fact is iced watches do not sell as well as watches without the diamonds. Typically we say good used pricing on a Breitling is about 50% (plus or minus) of retail. I would expect better than that on a good watch or a diamond bezel watch.

IMHO. ;)

Thank you guys, this is the feedback I was looking for! You guys are awesome. I will post up more details tomorrow, including pictures because I am going to look at it tomorrow. Also, the friend I am buying it from is a "high end" jeweler. The main advantage of buying from him is that he will buy back the watch for full or almost full price if I want to exchange or buy something else in the future. Hopefully something works out
