I've recently warmed up to the contemporary stuff lately, particularly Breitling's "old" (not vintage  ) offerings and I've been noticing on average that a lot of the pieces have maintained second hand prices fairly well. Just on the top of my head like the superocean series (heritage and chrono), steelfish, etc.

To put it in a nice way... do any of our respectable members think that's it's because some of the offerings Breitling have put out recently?

I think that it's more to do with where list prices have been going - when the SA was launched in 2004 it was listed at $3,230 on Pro I, now on the equivalent Pro II it's somewhat higher

When buying resale buyers aren't going to discount that much more for (say) a 2009 over a 2010 or a 2006 over a 2007.

Probably some of all. I will say that in the US, the dollar devaluation probably has alot to due with our price increases. I can remember when the CAD was much less than parity. So, current used USD prices may be alittle skewed. On a side note, the devaluation I've seen on some brands used vs new prices would equal the list price on many Breitlings.

I agree with Roff, but not completely. When I sold my Rolex GMT Master the going rate was about $1000 above what it was used, nine years before. Part of that, I think, is the fact that a new Ceramic is over $8K compared to about $4300 in '02, but the other factor was some people want the option of switching colors on the bezel.

I bought a new SMP at Bailey, Banks & Biddle in 2003 or 4 for under $1500. From what I have noticed lately, that's the lower end for a good full-size automatic like the one I owned. Nothing special about the watch, just that everything went up.

On the other hand, I have the sense that Steelfish, for example, are becoming harder to find in the resale market, and the price seems to be inching up a little. My theory is that if people don't like the new products they hang on to the old products longer, which reduces the resale supply, which could drive up the price.

I think Roff is right that the main factor is new (or last in the case of discontinued models) retail. Assuming excellent condition, people tend to look at current retail when judging the asking price and offers.

Id guess it definitely has to do with the price increases. Like Roof says, sellers dont change the price much based one whether its a 2006 or a 2009. Part of the reason that Rolex tends to sell for a good chunk of the retail price on the used market is that they have looked the same forever. So even a 20 year old Sub might still appeal to the same demographic as a brand new one.

it's funny how things go here in Japan....
USD and Euro has just weakened over the last couple of years, and list price of Breitling watches has just raised almost every year....
just do the math, Euro lost about 37% of its value since 2008, and in the same time frame Breitling Skyland has its list price raised about 16%, how come?

Easy, Switzerland doesn't use the Euro, it uses the Swiss Franc.

I was in Hongkong 2 years ago and was shocked :wowzers to see a Pre-Owned Breitling Steelfish being sold at a price that you could have bought brand new here in the US.

yeah, but even Swiss Franc did lost about 15% since 2008 against Yen...
I guess they're just following the theory where you can ask for whatever price people feels comfortable to pay...

Currency down 15% and prices up 16% is pretty consistent with the kind of increases that have been happening everywhere else in the world.

Some very astute insights from everyone... Definitely I can see the price increase, but also what Scott said about the old stuff being more appealing therefore people holding onto them longer... Like one example, the SMP with the speedie bracelet... particularly the 2254.50... I remember like even last year they were only going for 1100-1300... now I'd be lucky to find one for 1.5k... some excellent examples with box and papers are going for almost 2k... I feel some of the Breitlings are starting to hold their depreciation value fairly well.

So basically I guess what I'm trying to say is regardless of price increases, the depreciation "percentage" for certain models have held steadily...

the simple economics of supply and demand I guess...

Seen the B 01 GTM over 8.5K euro
