Post subject:  B01 Maintenance costs
I just noticed that Breitling has posted maintenance costs for the B01 movement and it's quite a bit higher than the others.

US is $750 ($560 for regular chronograph), no basic cost for some reason

UK is GBP495 (GBP321 for regular), basic service is GBP160 vs. GBP149

I guess that it is due in part to the complexity, but also parts cost is likely higher for in house movements.

How much more complex is the B01 movement? I know they have something to protect it from being damaged when changing the date, sorry can't remember what it's called, but other than that is it really that much different?

WOW! That's a bit extreme!! Anyone know the service intervals on the B01 or has that remained the same as ETA based movements?

Interesting, but I guess not wholely surprising given that a lot of parts won't be "off the shelf" items.

Plus of course we have to remember there will clearly be an element of, "The B01 is our most exclusive range, so you will pay a bit more for that exclusivity", etc.

It's not that much more complicated as watch movements go - there's nothing groundbreaking about it so there are no particularly 'new' challenges that the watchmakers have to solve during servicing. It's a different approach to the chrono functions, the date change and the auto winding for Breitling, so there will be training needed, and likely some degree of retooling.

Unless we are talking really high complication or (to a degree) high beat watches the service intervals of modern watches should be dictated by the lifecycle of the oils before they breakdown so it will still be 5 - 7 years. I wouldn't be surprised if Breitling recommended shorter service intervals for the B01 initially because they will want to get their hands on them and see whether the real world wear and tear is mirroring the simulations that they have performed.

I noticed that the other day as well, but it didnt strike me as too out of the ordinary when taking into account of other manufacturers price to service an in-house chrono.

I would assume an in-house, as opposed to basically an ETA movement, means Breitling have a monopoly on servicing/repair so have carte blanche to charge whatever they want. It's not like you can take it anywhere else. I guess it's something to consider when buying any in-house movement.

Out of curiosity, how do Breitling servicing costs for the B01 compare to those for a Daytona or IWC etc with in-house chronograph movements.?

This is how I've always looked at it, $9-$13 per month to wear a nice watch for years. Much more tolerable that way.

They aren't out of line with the other manufactures.

That is a good way to look at it. I just went back and put away $10 a month for every month I have owned my SA that way when it does need a service I already have "that" money saved. Thanks for the tip..

Then based on this thread Roff, maybe my AD is not trying to make money from me after all as you have said in viewtopic.php?f=12&t=20305. :wink:

Back then, my AD recommended service after 4 to 5 years for a cost of CHF 500 (around $ 550) with a 50% discount for a new strap included. Maybe he already had his directives for shorter service intervals.
