Post subject:  Airport security - Ling newbie
ok, maybe a silly question, but as i sit and wait for the arrival of my new (and first) superocean :lingsrock: , and have to fly in about a month. what do i do with it going through security? i dont like using those little bowls to put my stuff in, but it is what it is. I really dont even like having to take off my maui's :), not so much for losing them, but taking a chance of scratching, so i put them in a case and then in my backpack. so, i'm sure i'm not going to like having to take off my new watch, nevermind taking my eyes off it even for a few seconds, worrying about it bouncing around in the bowl, etc.

what do you all do? put it in a shoe? coat pocket? or can i just wear it through?

First of all, congratulations on the new watch!! You'll find that this will most liely be your first of many Breitlings. I hate taking my watch off in such a crowded place especially when I am not going to be able to keep eyes on. I definitely put it in my carry on while I walk through the metal detector, and have never had any problems.

This came up a while ago and as I recall there was quite a lot of debate about whether it was OK to wear it through the metal detectors - don't think that there was ever a satisfactory answer.

If I take multiple watches on a trip then they go in my hand luggage in the travel cases - about 1 time in 3 they get pulled and swiped with the little cloth things (to test for explosives I guess) as they are a little unsure about people taking multiple watches. For the one I'm wearing I generally put it in the tray but make sure that I grab it pretty quick when it comes through.

I always put mine in my shoe, since they are going through the machine too. And I dont take my eyes off the conveyor.

Ive never had trouble walking straight through while wearing it, but a few weeks ago in Denver it set off the detector. I had to put it in a bowl. I guess ill just wear it through LAX and then put it in my bag before returning through a different airport from now on.

I find it strange personally that some of you have been able to wear yours through. I can't say I've ever tried but that's because I've been told to remove it, once to often for it not to be automatic obviously.

I go through airports regularly and each time I take it off and put it in the tray with the rest of stuff. I've never had a problem with getting the watch back and would be surprised if I did. I don't watch the tray obsessively but then I don't stray far either. No problem with scratches either.

Traditionally all my older watches I would take them off and put it in the bin.

I think the first time I took my Aerospace through, the little beeping noise went off.

So now I just put it in my carry bag.

On a somewhat related story, one detector was especially sensitive as it did not like the number of zippers on my travel pants. :roll:

I do the shoe thing or put it in carry on. No sense in getting the beep and then they do the whole check you over thing with the metal detector wand. Prevention is best I think and then you're not holding up the line. Lord knows we have to take longer to go through lines at the airport already. Just doing my part to help out.

Take the watch off and put it in the side pocket of your jacket, close the zipper, put the jacket on the tray and send it through.

Then you just pick up your jacket, put it on, and all you need to do is reach into your pocket.

This simple routine always worked fine for me, I find it safe and quick.

Welcome to the site

Worn all the time, and had no problems, I think the scanners show an approximate location of the metal item and if the searcher can see a large watch then they let you through, been patted down a few times but no more than pre Ling days. Never been asked to go back and put it through the scanner.

But putting a few thousand quids worth of watch in shoes, jackets, plastic trays etc with joe public around, nah not for me.

Just place your watch wrist on your lower back and then walk through. As long as I have covered my watch with a shirt/sweater there has never been a problem. If uncovered, the security might insist on removing the watch though.

Agree with Aleister. I go through the airport detectors several times every day. Put your wrist in the small of your back as you pass through, never sets it off. That's what I was taught by the security people many years ago. Occasionally security have asked me to take it off because they think it will set off the buzzer. Politely I smile & just walk through without stopping. When it doesn't go off they look the other way. Personally I will never willingly remove my watch unless I've set set the bells off, which has never occurred.
