So is a urinal. That still doesn't mean I want to wear it.

First Tom pulls out the Captain & Tennille reference. Now you're doing the Rolling Stones.

To be fair, the brushed Buck Rogers bezel really isn't that bad. In fact, I'd be OK wearing it. However, given that the Chronomat is now up to $9k USD, it needs to be better than just "OK." At that price, I need to love it. Besides, the dials are still too busy and over-stylized for my taste.

Point taken. And it's true that price is starting to become indecent. :x

I haven't had time to hang out here lately, but wanted to weigh in on the new Colt. Get your flame-throwers ready :guns: because I actually find a lot to like about this watch . . .

Image

I like the bezel. I think it works in the context of the overall design, and there's nothing wacky about it (i.e., no rubber, no overly stylized numerals). No, it's not the Colt II bezel, but that alone doesn't make it bad.

I like the absence of fitted end links, if for no other reason than it's fresh and different.

I like the straightforward hands, dial numerals and hour markers.

And I like the way all of the above come together to give the watch an overall straightforward and toolish feel (relative to most other 'Ling models anyway)...kind of "industrial" for want of a better word.

What I don't like:

The size. This watch would be better at 42 mm IMO.

Quartz only? Nothing against quartz, I have a couple and really like them, but quartz should be an alternative to mechanical, not the only offering.

The inexplicable lines radiating from the center to upper right and lower left. What's the point?

So flame away, but if I ever have a chance to pick up one of these used at the right price, I might just do it.

But would I trade away my Colt II for one? Not a chance!

Evidently not, as Sooner seems to like the Colt, too. To each his own, of course, and some of what he says makes sense. But there's one fact I can't get past: that bezel is reminiscent of a TAG Aquaracer and Formula 1. Whether that's good or bad is subjective, but I'm having a hard time imagining the argument that says it's a good thing. Even if you're not a TAG hater (and I'm not, although most of the brand's offerings do nothing for me), I'm not sure why anyone wouldn't see it as troubling that Breitling has done away with a bezel style that was uniquely their own (rider tabs), and is now embracing styles that are either divisive (Buck Rogers) or derivative (Colt).

Seriously, though, maybe I don't have a critical enough eye, but to say that it's actually derivative of the Aquaracer seems a bit of a stretch:

I do agree it's disappointing for Breitling to abandon a unique bezel design that was totally theirs for one that's somewhat more generic...one that's more consistent with a categorical norm if you will. Even so, I'd take the new Colt over an Aquaracer any day, quartz and all.

I'll bet $$ to donuts that quartz Colt will be well into the $3K range. I would not contemplate buying one anywhere near there even if it had an automatic movement.

Wonder if this bezel ends up on the Avengers.

A lot of people in this and other Colt threads have mentioned how much the Colt bezel looks like a TAG. The Aquaracer and the Formula 1 bezels are the most direct comparisons. Perhaps in a direct side-by-side view, like what you've provided, it becomes clear they're not identical. Clearly, though, enough people are struck by the similarities as to make the comparison. Also, the bezel you showed is one of two current Aquaracer bezels. If you mix those two up, and throw in a Formula 1 for good measure, I think there's enough TAG DNA there to trace elements to what is in the Colt bezel. And again, even if the Colt bezel isn't identical to any one TAG bezel, I still maintain the new Colt bezel is reminiscent of a TAG, and is unlike anything we typically associate with Breitling.

Now we should re-title this thread - Many Pictures of Uninspired Watches.

Can't predict if it would be this one, but I'm betting something will. It appears Breitling is putting the rider tab bezel out to pasture one model at a time.
