Well at least RM has found a niche in the market : sure, it's a niche no-one else wants, but it's a niche nonetheless!

In all seriousness I have huge respect for their technical watchmaking skill and their use of materials. I just wish their designs were more palatable. (Although if they've sold all those Bonbons already, they must be doing something right for someone. )

They do have a few really good looking pieces, especially those in titanium with solid colored dials. And even some of the RG models. And the watchmaking and innovation are exceptional. Its just the absurdness that drives me away.

Same with UN, I was really excited about the new Freak, then they release a series depicting lesbian mermaids giving oral sex

I would love to see ze traditionalists at A Lange & Sohne reactiong to those watches. That would make an amazing realty show!

I remember RGM back when it first started out. Its great to see the company has evolved to the level where they can produce such a handsome enamel dial watch with in house movement. I think the price is a bit high for what it is, but the exclusivity and the fact that its American for a change has a price.

I am sure many patriotic Americans who are looking to get something that reminds them when made in the USA meant something will support this company. I look forward to seeing how they do in the future.

I was really taken by that, and the price was fair. It almost, almost, made me consider this as a guilty pleasure and pick it up. So I decided to do some research on the watch and see what the movement was all about and such. And came by this quote from the owner and lead designer:

If ever there was a time to have a middle finger emoticon! Its one thing to try and forgive how heavily they copied Patek, but to demean a profession as old, noble, and complex as watchmaking in favor of fashion-first jewelry tendencies calls for an out right boycott! Anyone who considers himself a supporter of mechanical watchmaking as an art form would do well to steer clear from this group of idiots.

While on road trip my wife took advantage of an opportunity to visit the RGM "factory" in Mount Joy, PA. Headquartered in a former bank, we were able to observe the actual production of some of the RGM watches. Roland Murphy himself took time out of his day to show us and explain the production processes involved in the watches that he offers for sale. It was a truly rewarding experience, the complete opposite of when you walk into some boutiques and the staff have little or no idea of what they are talking about! if anyone ever has the opportunity to visit I would strongly recommend that you do!

Sounds like a great trip! Good for you guys. I would definitely try that if I was in town, and I would very much like to meet Roland. He seems like a real pioneer and WIS, quite the accomplishment.

If I was American I would buy one of his watches immediately, the sense of pride of owning a piece of Horology made to such high standards from one's own country is worth it alone. I have been in Japan for business and was surprised at how many people there wore Seiko and Grand Seiko to business meetings, met quite a few WIS and although they had vast collections that included Swiss and German brands they took pride in Japanese workmanship and made it a point to wear them to meetings with foreign partners. I can definitely see why.

Its also a matter of supporting a new business, Roland seems to be all about classical watchmaking, and is trying to put the USA on the horological map, a WIS and a patriot, regardless of whichever country a man with values deserves praise and support. Good for him!

I agree it's much better, but it's still a design I just can't warm to.

To be fair to RM, they have developed a very distinctive design language, which is ultimately what all watch brands aspire to - to be instantly recognisable (and desirable). Just ask Rolex!

If you like the designs, and can afford them, then RM are a fantastic brand as their technical skills and levels of finishing are incredible. Unfortunately (or is it fortunately!?) I fall at the first two hurdles in that last sentence!

Agreed, personally though I have an additional requirement; I must respect the brand as a whole. Piaget and now RM have performed one to manny taboos as far as I am concerned,

Breitling where on the fence for a while there, but had many wins that kept them at the top of my list, its great to see what I saw as identity betrayal is now being phased out and replaced with such great models.
