Here's something that I seem to go back and forth on, I really want a watch with a retro style but I go back and forth on buying an actual vintage watch of one of the more updated classics. There are 2 watches that I go back and forth on buying but after seeing the Mark II with the racing dial at an Omega boutique on a recent getaway, I've decided that's my next watch. I was browsing the preowned section today at Govberg and happened to notice they got in an original Mark II with the racing dial. The vintage charm of the original model is really appealing to me but the newer version has the lumed tachy, the date feature, and the adjustable clasp. For reference, here is a quick picture to compare the 2 dials. The vintage one isn't the actual watch Govberg has, just a borrowed image from the internet.

Here is the link to the one preowned vintage watch Govberg has

Basically I'm trying to see if you'd buy a vintage watch and embrace the history, or buy something new with all the updated features?

Personally, I love the vintage look but not the vintage hassle..... which means buying the new version would be an absolute no-brainer for me, especially considering what a fantastically sympathetic "re-imagining" Omega have done in this case.

The modern movement, the bracelet, the clasp, the sapphire crystal, the warranty, all of that makes the modern version the only choice for me. Additionally while the original didn't have a date, here it's very unobtrusive at 6 (please take note Breitling!) and when all's said and done, it's a nice simple complication to have.

I'm a bit like you Justin. I'm back and for to a birth year (1983) Sub 16800 with Matte dial. I like the watch but the bracelet is crap and it's hard to find an all original model in good condition for a price I think is fair.

On the other and the SubC no date is awesome...I think it's obviously going to be my choice. Cheaper or same price as the vintage I'm looking at and way easier to find. Especially in Canada.

Personally, I love the look and the idea and the heritage of a true vintage watch, but I don't think I would be able to own one currently. I love looking at all the pictures of the Vintage watches on here, but it takes a lot of knowledge and studying and background to learn about finding a correct and accurate and reasonably priced and functioning model.

That leaves me in the camp of appreciating the Aesthetics and the heritage of a true vintage watch, but I personally would purchase a modern one due to all the reasons that driver listed above. That way you get a mix of the modern technology with the Vintage feel and look.

I know exactly what you mean about a birth year Sub. I'm in 1981 so I'd be buying the same model you'd buy. I once saw one with papers dated the day before my actual birthday and thought for a very long about pulling the trigger but I couldn't do it.

This is what keeps putting me towards the newer model. I know with a new one that I'll get the full warranty and be protected in case anything happens. The adjustable clasp is a huge plus for me since I love it on my SubC.

It is a fabulous watch and probably the Speedmaster variant that appeals to me the most. The modern rendition is excellent and with all the upgrades in terms of materials, design, warranty etc, the current version is the way to go.

I am going to go with the new one. I've had the chance to handle it a couple of times this at a couple of Omega boutiques and the new one is really nice. I love the subtle orange glow that shines around the dial. The adjustable clasp is an even bigger plus with the newer version. It'll be on my wrist, just not sure exactly when it'll happen.

All things considered, going with the new version is the way I would go, as well. I think that choice makes a lot of sense, Justin.

For the most part, I'm set on the Omega Mark 2 but I did see this and it caught my eye. I'm just not sure I could wear an all black watch.
