A sweet watch with half of the value erased. For a broken crystal and subdial hand. Sigh.

When I sent the watch back to Breitling I assumed (rightly or wrongly) that it would be refurbishing to its original undamaged state? Did they not do that? Would I have been better leaving it incomplete and broken?

in 99.9999% of all watches they are better left 'as is' , any watchmaker could have replaced the plexiglass and sourced a hand , serviced it and left original

Breitling has a stupid policy changing everything (hands, dial , bezel etc) eradicating originality and value . Not something you could have known 12 years ago but they continue to do it today , which is silly

left alone in an acceptable condition you'd have a 12-15K watch , right now the value is half that due to replaced parts

Ash, everything needs to be considered in context. What @Dracha says is correct if you are a serious collector, where the two most important characteristics are [original] condition and provenance. But this may not be correct for everyone and in every circumstances, and this is sometimes forgotten by those who have a zeal for collecting. Unfortunately, it is also largely the collectors who set the prices (although they too complain when prices spiral uncontrollably), so unless an owner has accommodated the characteristics desired by collectors, while still meeting their ownership aims, they can come unstuck with regards to maximising resale value. Of course, owners generally only learn this when they look into why they are not being offered the large sums that they have seen similar watches go for on eBay, Chrono24 and forums such as this, and by then it is too late.

On the matter as to why Breitling and other watch manufacturers restore or renovate watches, rather than conserve or preserve them, it is probably what they get asked to do more often than not, so they are just meeting customers' demands. To them it is just a watch that they sold to somebody once, and their restoration service is merely adding value to their business. Besides, many of these companies are so removed from their own origins that they don't care about their own history unless they can use it in their marketing to milk more profit; and with respect to their watches, they probably already have enough collection quality pieces in their own museums to add a bit of flavour to that milk.

I think I may have the replaced parts as they sent them back to me in a little yellow Breitling box....

If I'd known that Breitling replaced it with a mishmash of parts I would have got it returned back to its original state using a specialist. :?

It's great that you have the original parts as this may (emphasis on MAY, as sometimes they cannot be refitted) go some way to bringing the watch back to its original condition, but the biggest unrecoverable issue is that it looks like they have heavily polished at least the case back, and probably the case and possibly the bezel too (although it is just as likely to have been replaced).

Could you find the yellow box and post pictures of the parts you have. Please be careful handling them.

Hi guys. I'm so sorry for my absence. My life went a little chaotic for a while and I let a few things slip my attention. This forum being one. Apologies.

I was cleaning out some boxes the other day and I found the spare parts in the yellow that were returned after the refurbishment! It appears I have all of the hands and a few other small components.
I have taken some pictures of them to show you, but as already stated earlier in this post I'm a bit of an ape when it comes to posting pics.... can someone host them for me again if I send them to them?

Regards and thanks in advance.

Ash
